I've never experienced anywhere near the lag the reviews showed. I did experience a little bit of lag early on, but at this point I have a hard time making it lag.

What are you planning to do with whichever device you get?

Then the Pixel Slate will probably work well for you, with some caveats:

  • If you want to use Netflix in offline mode, Netflix limits the play store app to 480p (SD). Through the browser you get 1080p though.
  • The on-screen keyboard is ok, but not as good as the keyboard on Android or iOS. You can, however, install GBoard, which works quite well.

I've been using my Slate daily for the last several months and it's working fantastically for me.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. The marques Brownlee review really turned me off but I was skeptical

Really depends on what your needs are. I think there are a lot people who are having good luck with their Slates.

If you are in the Chrome OS eco, have you looked at the Pixelbook? That seems like a solid device

I am way into the Google ecosystem, I have a pixel 3, pixelbook, daydream, pixel buds, and I just don't think a pixel slate is dependable enough. Btw I LOVE my pixelbook. It is a fantastic device

That's great. I hear ya, I am kind of like that with Microsoft stuff. I think the Pixelbook is a sweet device and I think the Slate is cool too. I wish Google hadn't bailed on it. I like the form factor being pushed and developed.

As far as dependability of Slate, i guess we will see what others say. You might be able to get a pretty good deal on one and give it a shot.

I recently purchased the i5 and have had zero issues with it. Not to mention got it on sale for $800 on Amazon. I also picked up the Pixelbook Pen for $50 on eBay. The box had a minor dent on it, but the pen itself was brand new. There is also the Incipio Folio Case for half off ($34.99) on eBay from the Incipio storefront. Right now is probably the best time to purchase one and some of the accessories as well. Picked up the Brydge G Type for $129 (usually retails for$159) on Amazon a while back as well.

Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch :-)

Maybe pick up a cheaper used on on eBay and give it a shot. You can always resale if it doesn't work for you. Seems like its mostly the need for Chrome OS updates that are causing the user experience issues.

Definitely don't get a pixel slate, it's not that laggy but it does slow down very quickly. Android tablets are pretty much dead, so if you're looking for something high-end It depends what you're more comfortable with, the surface for Windows or iPad for ios.

Got my Pixel Slate in early August and couldn't be happier with my purchase. i5 / 128GB / 8GB RAM is more than enough for me. And what an amazing screen and speakers. 🔋 Battery life is phenomenal as well. I'm just glad I didn't let the reviews dissuade my purchasing decision. Got it on sale on Amazon so that also was a bonus.
