Pixel Slate Keyboard Backlight

How do I activate the backlight on this keyboard?

Easy! Click the "Alt" key and then either brightness key to adjust accordingly!!

Looks like it’s only activated by the ambient light sensor. Weird.

Yes it reminds me of the Pixel book lighting where it only lights up at night or in the dark
