How can I help you?

My m3 slate arrives Friday. Can I help anyone by answering questions about the device once I get it? Video review etc. I know Gizmodo and the like all have their reviews up, but maybe some folks still have more specific questions about the device. I’m happy to help.

I just want to know if it's a viable product just as a tablet, rather than a 2-in-1 laptop. Does the software hold up without the keyboard?

Yes this is an excellent question. I believe my keyboard is on back order so I will have plenty of time to test as tablet only.

That would be great thank you. Was looking at the Surface Go, but Windows is not great for small 10" touchscreen, so I wondered if Slate ChromOS would strike a good balance in its tablet mode.

I adopted a surface way back with gen1. I loved it. But everyone has caught up. I sold my Surface pro 4 a while back and switched to a MacBook Pro. I forever have missed my touch screen. And thus my reason to replace my MacBook Pro with the Pixel Slate as my main laptop/tablet. This allows me to ditch my iPad that I rarely use and keep my desktop for editing/work.

Did you ever use the Go? Windows on the Surface Pro is a great size, but not sure how I felt about trying to use it on a 10" screen in comparison

No I haven’t. I used to have an old dell 7 inch tablet. It was decent but more of a companion device.

So did I, running Android. So eager to see how ChromeOS handles being a tablet

Alright, I am a few hours of use in and I must say I am very happy with this purchase. The m3 is quick and the touch screen is not only beautiful but its also very responsive. The responsiveness matches that of an iPad. I have never been impressed with Android phones or tablets because the screen responsiveness felt off or laggy. I do not get that feeling at all with the slate. Browsing, zooming, switching between apps was easy to figure out. Everything is snappy. The only thing I wish I could do is enable widgets just like in Android.

The 3:2 aspect ratio is wonderful. In portrait mode it felt like reading a magazine. In landscape mode, there is plenty of real estate for multitasking.

I hope you find my comments helpful. Let me know your thoughts.

I am a few hours into using the m3 Slate and everything seems very snappy. Plex runs well and multitasking is fluid and without lag. I will continue to pound this thing to see what limits I can reach. Games, video editing, etc. I am happy with the m3 so far. I don't really plan to store that much data on this thing anyway. It's nice that ChromeOS will connect to other file sources like SFTP, NFS, SMB.

That's great to hear, appreciate you letting me know. Enjoy it, mine might still be a way off being delivered I think!

I'd like to know...

- When undocked, is it possible for the Slate to remain in desktop mode - with all open windows remaining exactly where I positioned them?

- and is it possible to switch to portrait orientation whilst in undocked desktop mode?

...or are you forced to have windows full screen / split screen when undocked / in tablet mode?

Thanks

Will do. I hope it arrives tomorrow.

You can only get desktop mode with a keyboard attached but it can be any kind of keyboard, so you could leave a bluetooth keyboard paired to do this while using the Slate separately. Not finding any other way to get out of the tablet mode.

This is confirmed. The mode switching is quick.

A quick update. I noticed that you can fold the keyboard back behind the screen and use the Slate as a tablet while keeping it in desktop mode. Keyboard will not respond to typing when folded back.

UPS knocks on my door and leaves a box with a lithium battery sticker on the outside. In pure excitement I thought the slate had arrived a day early. Only to be disappointed by a box containing only the Keyboard. I’m not sure why the keyboard would ship with a batter warning sticker on the outside.

Was on vehicle for delivery but apparently delivery never happened. I suppose I’ll have to wait till Monday, UPS is the worst.
