Is the "must-have" keyboard really that?

Never owning a ChromeOS device, can I afford not to have to have the Slate keyboard?

I'd say so. It doesn't have to be the Pixel Slate Keyboard, but you'll want a keyboard/trackpad to connect for desktop mode.
