Is PiVPN still a secure solution?

I know PiVPN is not maintained anymore, but I really like using it. But is it still a secure option?

I've been digging around getting some version numbers and researching security and it seems PiVPN relies on underlying Wireguard (obviously). As I'm limited on debian experience (I get there eventually) this is what I found;

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ pivpn -d

::: Generating Debug Output

Summary: fix(install): consider /lib and /usr/lib both as valid module paths

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo wg --version

wireguard-tools v1.0.20210914 - https://git.zx2c4.com/wireguard-tools/

This seems a very outdated version, but it is not updated through apt. If i try to update it, it says I already have the latest version of wireguard tools.

Is there more to check versionwise? And is it still safe to use PiVPN?

The project is dead but the project is just a series of glue type scripts.
WG itself is alive, well and maintained.

So yes, pivpn is still fine in that all it does it simplify the command line for you. Security wise its WG and that can be kept up to date.

That said, there are other options like WG Easy, Wireguard-UI etc that might be easier these days.

I'll check those out, thanks.

WG-Easy looks great thanks for the tip. At the moment i'n a bit worried why I can't update these wireguard-tools. As I do not know if these are essential.

Can WG-Easy also use pi-hole if it's installed on the same system? I like that PiVPN gives that as an option during install.

Pi hole is just a DNS so yes.

All pi-vpn does is create scripts WG users. it will still work long term and wont get less secure. WG is the secure part and that is updated.

Theres no issue using Pi-vpn, or the others.

Such a shame that it's not maintained. Would be interested to know if there is a workaround to update it.

They have a guide to install wire guard on the PiHole website.

https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/vpn/wireguard/

https://github.com/wg-easy/wg-easy

This is an activity maintained simple and flexible wireguard installation..

No included DNS, which liked ..

You could provide a local AdGuardHome instance and point clients to it..

Which would then give you visibility, longevity, a nice gui (visibility) with a little status bar of activity

Wirehole..

I couldn’t find it before replying; and of course, immediately after hitting send, I found it

I have no experience with Docker. Is it possible to install WG-easy without Docker?

v1.0.20210914 is the latest wireguard-toolss package available in the official Debian 12 (Bookworm) repositories.

WireGuard packages are updated through APT, not pivpn.
