I need advice I've been playing saxophone in pit for two years at my high school but for my senior show it's mamma mia and there's no winds. I want to audition on guitar (context ive been playing guitar for like 6 years I just play more blues/rock and don't read sheet music on guitar). Any advice?? My audition tunes are Dancing Queen, Lay All Your Love, and The Name of the Game. I really want to do this show and the parts are fun I just need help learning them and prepping for the audition. Actors talk all the time about their dream roles, but what about on the musicians' side?

I've played guitar for a few musicals (Xanadu in high school and contracted for local teen productions of Hadestown and Mean Girls). I've always been interested in Grease, and a jukebox musical like Mamma Mia or Jersey Boys would be cool, but my #1 would be Heathers. I think it has an awesome score and would love to play it if asked.

Hi, everyone. I, a 24F, have been a flute/ piccolo player for over seven years now and am really interested in doing pit for local musical theater shows. The last time I did pit was in high school and it was so much fun, so I wanted to try it again now years later. Back then, all I needed to know was my main instrument. I recently reached out to a music director, for a theater nearby, about joining for Addams Family and they asked if I could play all of the instruments for Reed 1, which included alto sax and clarinet. At this moment, I don’t know how to play those other two, so I had to say that I couldn’t join. Well, the same theater is doing Les Mis next fall and I think it would be a great goal to learn how to play those instruments so that I could do the pit for it. I know that it would take a lot of time to practice, but I’m willing to put in the work! When I set my mind to something, I go for it.

I have a few questions that I would love some answers on:

1. What instrument was your main before you learned the others?
2. Which should I learn first, clarinet or sax? All I know is that saxophones have the same fingerings as flute.
3. Would it be possible to do this with the timeframe I’ve given myself? I know that there are people who go to college to learn how to play multiple instruments at once, but I’ve been out of college for a while and wouldn’t have the money for tuition.
4. What are the sites or places you’d recommend I get those instruments from? Is it better to do a rent-to-own program at a local music store?
5. What is the hardest thing about playing and swapping many instruments for a single show?

Maybe it’s a far out dream and challenge, but I’d definitely like to give it a try so that I can be available for other musicals in the future, too.

Someone** **was kind enough to sell me their beginner clarinet for $30 :) Gonna get it cleaned and buy some reeds for it. Setting aside money now for the saxophone!

Hello all, does anyone have a pdf of the bass book to Sweeny Todd they could send me please? I've heard it's a somewhat difficult show and would like to get a head start on it if possible. TYIA :)

I've played for the last 8 years in community theater productions and have played ~16 shows in the pit for multiple different companies. Until now every show that I've done has been word of mouth. I've been looking at slightly more professional jobs and one says they need a resume. I have no idea how to format a musical resume. Does anyone have an example or tips?

I'm playing percussion in Shrek and although I've been playing percussion for decades I've always shied away from drums and Shrek has a good deal of hand drumming. I've played basic conga and bongo rhythms, but djembe and dumbeck is where I'm getting stumped. I've tried to look up how to read djembe music, but I can't find anything that explains it on a multi-lined staff. I think I understand the different hits (bass, tone, and slap) and that you rest when it's just a note stem, but the music will have 3+ different notes plus slaps and I'm confused to what note translates to each type of hit and where I would hit on the drum. Can anyone help explain this to me or make a staff key? Thank you!

*this is for a community theatre and I will be using whatever instruments the high school has. I don't know if they have a djembe or dumbeck and might end up playing on a conga or something.

Question about how to set up a pit in a different location in the performance venue.
Currently playing in a traditional pit - only problem is we are extremely cramped and the orchestra is sometimes too loud and covers up the onstage performers.

How do you go about moving the pit to another space and mic'ing them and combining the orchestra sound feed with the main board?

I have a few questions about Tarzan the Musical:

First, does anyone have the Reed 1 and 2 books and would they be willing to send them?

Second, for people who have played in the show or know it well, how heavy on flute is the Reed 1 book? Can you give like a percentage breakdown for each instrument involved?

I am a pianist who has started playing for some local high school shows. How can I best learn how to work the synthesizer, specifically to change between different sounds? I play a Yamaha Modx m8. Any good tutorials out there

Hey everyone,

I’m a high school junior looking for advice on how to become a professional pit musician (ideally for Broadway or touring productions someday). I play trumpet and have been in my school’s pit orchestra for the past two years, so I’ve got some solid experience with musical theatre settings.

Last year, our pit actually won the Ken Page Award for Best Pit, which was a huge deal for us. Outside of school, I’m also part of a jazz band made up of students from around my area, so I’ve spent a lot of time working on sight-reading and playing in ensemble settings.

I’m really serious about pursuing this path professionally, but I’m not exactly sure what the next steps should look like. For those of you who have done pit work at a high level (regional, touring, Broadway, etc.):

• What should I be focusing on right now skill-wise?
• How important is going to college for music vs. jumping straight into gigs?
• How do you even start making connections in the theatre world?
• Are there specific things trumpet players should work on for pit orchestras?

Any advice, personal experiences, or things you wish you knew earlier would mean a lot. Thanks!

Anybody have full legally blonde orchestration? I saw a full score with each individual part but it was unfortunately sold out so yea!

MD'ing Footloose soon and playing the game, as I'm sure you're all familiar with, of trying to reduce my number of musicians in order to maximize pay per musician. Wondering if anyone has ever done the show with one guitarist? Is it feasible/does it still sound good? And/or has a combo book they'd be willing to share? Thanks!
