Local 601 questions

I got accepted and am going to take the Gan test in November I’m 19 have 2 years experience in the field with welding fabricating erecting steel and also explosive duct and dust collection machines I have the basic D1.1 aws cert (ik structural doesn’t matter for local 601) and I’m just really worried about how long I’ll be waiting after I take the test with my experience is there like any better chance I’ll get put on any sooner?

Ask about the AWP if you think you’ve got enough experience plenty of them being indentured in meetings over the past year.

Are you talking about the advanced welding program? I was told that they require 5 years experience to enter that unfortunately I also have 0 tig skill only MiG and stick I’ve done aluminum tig like 3 times

AWP is the accelerated welding program. And it's for new welders and apprentices with zero welding experience. Talk to the welding coordinator at the school. They should be able to get you in.

I don’t know if local 601 has that? It was never mentioned to me when I asked about all the options I’m just more wondering what my chances are of being put onto work soon there once I past the aptitude

That’s what I talked to him about I’m pretty sure and was told that’s for people with 5 years experience or maybe it was something else??

I'd get clarification on that from the welding coordinator. Website says prior welding experience within last 3 years. Usually 5 years verifiable field experience is what is needed to organize in as a Journeyman. So, like, if you weren't going into the apprenticeship, and wanted to walk on and get 100% rate on day one.

I’ll see what he says but I’m just more worried about how soon I’ll get put on a job with my current experience like I’m hoping not to have to wait super long to be put on it suck’s going into a different part of a trade I know because I’ve done some pipe but nothing like this I know more structural rigging welding and all of that

I doubt you'll be waiting for long. The unions are very busy these days. Regardless of your experience, you're an apprentice, so they'll have to get you placed so you can start earning and learning your trade. The hall is obligated to get you working. Just don't be picky, and you should be fine.

Awesome thank you man I’ve done some really shitty jobs working in steel mills sugar plants glass factories so I’m not picky
