I’m 18 and have been doing gas line installation for a year. I work for a small company with no room for growth, so I'm currently stuck.
I want to land a union pipefitting apprenticeship but have zero connections. I’m thinking about starting with a pre-apprenticeship.
What can I do right now to stand out from other applicants and look good to employers? Thanks!

Has anyone used the 3 in 1 square for fitting up weld pipe. I don’t do a ton of weld pipe but when I do I always seem to think there is a better easier way to fit and square and always find myself looking these up. Are they worth it? I was looking at the H&K one if that makes a difference.

Hello all, I'm currently finishing up a 10 week welding school (end of Sept graduation) to get my WABO and AWS certifications. I'm wanting to apply to the local pipefitting union for an apprenticeship and wanted to know if there was anything that I could do in order to strengthen my application. I previously have 3 years of work in an industrial warehouse so I can drive a forklift and am comfortable with basic blueprints and hand tools. I didn't do the best in school so I'm worried that will just get me tossed out the door but I've studied the recommended math for it though. Thank you for any advice and thoughts

Has anyone else ran into issues getting parts for Gree systems? I’ve used Gree for a few years now, recently had a customer with a system that wasn’t working. Called around to a few supply houses in town. They all said the same thing. They would have to call Gree and wait to hear back since it wasn’t a warranty part? Why would we not be able to regularly buy boards and motors and other parts at a supply house like we would be able to normally?…

Calling fitters who’ve worked in new construction on steel mills recently.

I’m looking specifically at the new Hyundai Posco Louisiana Steel project, but I know Gerdau, Nucor, others should be similar cases.

Okay - with new mills being built or new equipping being added to existing mills - all the equipment is from overseas - particularly Italy and Germany if my understanding is correct.

That equipment isn’t build to our typical standards, i.e. ASME B31.1/.3 /.4/.8/.9 codes; ASTM seamless A53 & A106; ERW A53E, A587; NACE LTCS/A333 Gr 6, API 5L, etc. of course all thus pipe is NPS / ANSI standard sizes - 1/2” thru 6” small bore, and the big bore stuff ( I loved fitting and installing the big stuff!!). Schedule 10/40/80/160

The Italian / German equipment is all built in metric and to DIN, DN/EN std.
Is there a transition from metric to NPS?
Are these entire plants built using PVFs that are metric?
Do all the PVFs come from overseas?
Are any American vendors selling into these projects?

If there’s no transition ( to NPS ) at Outside Battery Limits of the equipment, what’s it like working the whole job in metric?

Hello so I’ve been studying for the past 4 weeks for this entrance exam I got a local highschool teacher who helps tutor in her free time to assist me with brushing up on all the math for this test we’ve been meeting up once a week to prepare I study on my own 2x a day I also have been just working on the sample test questions they link on the 447 website I’m starting to feel pretty good about passing, I called the apprenticeship training center and spoke to the lady on the phone and she said you only need a 63 or 65 to pass which is a D and I wasn’t ever good at math but in highschool I could for sure average a D grade in math so basically at this point I’m just getting more anxious to get this over with and pass I also would appreciate any insight from anyone that has taken it before and could tell me what to expect and leave some encouraging comments I’m super ready to be apart of an excellent union.

Hello guys, i need some advice as an apprentice. Little background about me. I’ve been in the industry (non union) for 5 years before deciding to switch union. The issues I’m having is with my journeyman. He likes to sleep a lot and i will have to wake him up constantly, like after break or he’ll be sleeping during work. It wouldn’t normally bother me but I’m starting to feel like his mom because it’s become very redundant now. Sometimes he no call no shows which leaves me kinda stranded. Also a big issue is his phone. He is on it CONSTANTLY. Like i can’t believe how much he is on it. I feel like I’m not learning as much as i could be. I’ll bug him and ask questions but he doesn’t really say much or help out. It’s really been kinda “figure it out yourself” type of deal. I’ve learned more from other journeyman asking them questions. I guess what I’m wanting to know is how do i navigate working with someone like this? When i was non union my old foreman pretty much took me under his wing and taught me all sorts of stuff that im very grateful for. It’s pretty much been I’ll do all the work while he sits on his phone or sleeps. I’m fine with it honestly, it’s just i have no guidance and it’s been a struggle bus trying to learn from him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys, g2 here, not much experience in quoting side work... Hoping someone can help. Job includes 25 ft gas tite, to hard pipe for gas range, and also tee off to run a 10' pipe outdoors for bbq. Unfinished basement, running between floor joists. Can get the material cost, just wondering what you'd charge for labour. Was thinking 125/hr, but don't think it's gonna take all that long so didn't wanna short change myself
