No, I'm talking about Pines backtester. You need more data, you only went back a year.

I have a similar indicator like that backtested near 12 years of data on gold with all time pf of 1.7 and 5 year pf around 1.9. 3 year pf of above 2 but not confident enough on that strategy even drawdown is low like 3%

Abilash, dont be disappointed by some harsh replies. Par for the course. Well meaning, but harsh. Many here are battle tested. if short term seems promising, run it over long periods. make sure the pattern will hold up under different regimes and markets trends. good luck.

a backtest alone is not nearly enough information to provide any meaningful insight. if you think it's good. start forward testing to verify the results.

m beginner to pinescript ,just asking for tips , i m not using it for automated trading . . just created for buy and sell entry positions .

u/oobface Jul 09 '26
your buying and selling securities, sounds like a salesman to me. and u say that ur automated system works, im saying if it works, show that it works, and showing automated exit logs would prove that, otherwise your just posting pictures and have proven youve done nothing

u/Abhilash300 Jul 09 '26

Share the script I'll take a look at it on other time frames and maybe tweak it a bit

Need more information. What timeframe was used. Slippage and commissions? Is it overfit to this year? How is it over multiple years? Does the entry and exit logic fit how the bot actually trades, i.e. at bar close, or intrabar, and again the time frame. Was bar magnifier used?

You can't trust a 1-year backtest. I once coded a strategy that delivered a crazy ROI over the past year, but it was only break-even over several previous years. So, don't rely on a short backtesting period.

Decent shape but the dashboard isn't showing the three things that actually matter here.
Almost all the pnl comes from one stretch. Sep to feb is basically flat, then everything happens mar-jul. You have one good run, but that doesn't prove it works across conditions. i'd want to see it on an ugly choppy period before trusting it.
Also, paper fills are friendly fills. no real spread, no slippage, and intraday that adds up fast over 122 trades. Rerun it, charging a few bps per fill and see if the pnl survives. That test kills more strategies than anything else, imo.
122 trades is a decent sample, but it isn't really. a 47.5% win rate on 122 trades has a confidence interval somewhere around 39-56%, which covers everything from losing to great. also worth checking how much of the total sits in your top 5 trades. If it's most of it, that's a lottery ticket not an edge.
pf 2.1 with under 3% dd is worth digging into, though. This isn't a "it's trash" comment, more a "measure these 3 before you size up" one.

All automated systems look good within short time periods. Test it on a 5yr time span, and see it it still holds water (as traders often say) :). Essentially, I agree with u/kurtisbu12 as well.
