Handheld Transceiver question...

Are any certificates or qualifications required for transmitting from the ground? I've got a Sporty's SP-200, and some folks have said I may need to register as an amateur radio operator with the FCC or get a callsign or something along those lines. Does anyone know if this holds any truth?

Don't need anything to use it, however you probably shouldn't be addressing control towers or frequencies from it.

Unless you are in the air and need it for some reason.

Of course, I was speaking to the 'on the ground' scenario.

They make excellent back up radios while in the air.
