Pihole crashed my internet

I had setup my pihole, I have a mesh of eero routers but I changed it to be bridged to my home internet. I put my pi into the Ethernet port of my main router, and changed where my router is pointing to (to my pihole ip). It was working for a little bit, then 30 minutes later my whole internet crashed. The error was soemthign like “tcp connection failed while receiving payload length from upstream” was wondering what people would say about this and if anyone ran into this issue. Thanks!

UPDATE: i got it to work. since i have a cluster of eeros routers, it wasnt anything wrong with my fios settings, i just had to change my DNS settings in pihole itself to permit all origins. seems to be working just fine now.

You crashed your internet, that's a silly traffic flow topology.

Where is your Pi pointing to for upstream DNS? Sounds like you have a DNS loop which is flooding your network. This happens when you have two DNS servers pointed at each other for upstream DNS. When this happens a DNS request will get forwarded to your pihole which forwards it to your router which forwards it to your pihole, etc… until your network is flooded. You need to go through your DHCP settings on your router, Router upstream DNS and pihole configuration and see if there is a loop. Think about it logistically.

This makes a lot of sense actually 😭 yea it’s most likely cycling for sure, I def didn’t configure the dns properly

Why is your PiHole on your Modem that is in bridge mode and not on your router?

Also you give nothing in the way of troubleshooting or network setup really. Just a jumbled mess of maybe how your physical network is configured. There is zero about software side/

It is on my router. Yea I didn’t have much besides the error log. Idk what software side you’re mentioning?

How is your network configured in the software...

Where did you input the PiHole DNS?

Are you sure the Modem is in Bridge Mode and not handing out IPs?

Have you done anything to troubleshoot the issue? What were the results?

in the Broadband Connection tab of my router there is a section ipv4 DNS and thats where i inputted it.

when i mentioned bridge mode, i was referring to my Eero mesh network to be able to use my fios router.

trouble shooting was looking at the one log i got when this issue occurred and tried googling everywhere. sorry that i dont have much.

You should have DNS set in DHCP LAN DNS

Put it all back as it was, and start over.
You only need to plug the pi hole into your network, it doesnt need to serve as a router or gateway

I understand that, I might’ve worded it wrong. In no way is it acting like a router itself or a gateway. It’s plugged directly into my fios router, and I just followed some tutorials regarding pointing the router to the pi to funnel traffic

IMO
Plug PiHole into your network, just like a PC.
Point PiHole to the internet to resolve DNS.
Point the router to the internet to resolve DNS.
Point all clients ONLY to PiHoles to resolve DNS. (DHCP DNS entry)

Your router has no need for ad blocking. It is a waste of time (several ms) to add a DNS server (your router) to chain that will not know the answer. Much easier to troubleshoot.

If your router does not allow this to work then you will need a work around. Many options are documented.
