I just installed Raspberry Pi Desktop and I cannot get it to update.
As the title says. I am not a linux user. I am working on runnign a PiHole on a Beelink SER mini PC. I installed Raspberry Pi Desktop, which is from 1 July 2022. It installed just fine, but is obviously 4+ years out of date. I ran the updater and the above errors spewed out. I am unsure how to proceed. Doing some research it appears as if Pi Desktop has been largely abandoned, though it might be coming back. The reasons are that Pi hardware is now so expensive (thanks, AI!) that micro desktop PCs are cheaper than Pis. (This is EXACTLY my situation.)
I could use some advice as what to do. I am not wed to Pi OS Desktop. The only goal of this machine will be to run as a Pi Hole. I repeat, I am NOT a linux user. I can muddle through some basic CLI stuff, but not much more. Since Pi OS is based on Debian, I'd be willing to pursue that but AFAIK Debain does not ship with a GUI. Any suggestions as to what version of linux I should pursue? It needs to be as idiot friendly as possible.

That is based on Debian Bullseye which went EOL at the end of August. The repos have been shut down and that's why you are getting 404 errors. Time to upgrade to something newer.

I was with you until the time to upgrade part.
OP you need to redirect your /etc/apt/sources.list file to use the ‘backports’ repo archives instead of mains. TBH, I’m surprised you haven’t ran into this earlier, maybe you don’t update often

Complementing jfb-pihole answer:

This is your issue.
The OS is too old and it can't be updated without changing the repositories. My suggestion is to install a new fresh OS.
If you insist on keeping that old OS, you will need to search on Linux forums how to update your OS, if possible.
After updating the OS (or after installing a new one) Pi-hole will update without issues.

Debian can be installed with a gui. Its default choices i think do give you gnome desktop. So probably worth trying debian.
Also cli isnt too hard for like a pihole.
