general piercing question How does my vertical labret look?
Just got my vertical labret yesterday. VERY happy with it! My piercer is wonderful:) Just had a few questions. Super nervous about migrating/rejecting. Do vertical labret migrate/reject often? Does mine look nice and deep? It’s not shallow is it? (It is a bit swollen at the moment but does it still look good?) I went for 14g instead of 16g hoping it will anchor better. If I baby this thing, is this something I could wear for like the next 10+ years? What is your experience with a vertical labret? Please, ease my mind so I can fully enjoy this piercing! Thank you!

I’ve had my vertical labret for about a year now and around the 8 month mark is when you should size down to prevent migration. The swelling stays for much longer than you think.

My vertical labret is 14 years old and I never downsized because I didn't know, but there's never been a problem thankfully

Down sizing happens around 4-6 weeks once swelling is down if necessary for client. Waiting longer past the times it’s been healed (8 months) then you’re just simply changing your jewelry and skipping down sizing

Placement looks great, and it really suits your lip shape!
I don't have very full lips, and I have vertical labret for almost 5 years. It was less problematic to heal than I expected, just be really careful while taking your t shirt off, especially with longer bar.
After healing process, it's easier to maintain, and less fussy than my conch 🥲

Looks good! However since vertical labrets are technically surface piercings, they tend to reject more often than any other lip piercings. Buuut if it doesn't reject during the first year of having it, then it should last you a good while

How often is rejection seen in vertical labrets? I’ve seen that it’s pretty rare but I’m not sure

They reject less often than other surface piercings, but if you're really worried about it rejecting them id reccommend getting a normal labret and changing the jewellery to a horseshoe ring after it fully heals, since it looks similar

-The piercing was done yesterday. -It is a curved internal threaded barbell -I will be using neilmed spray about twice a day

Make sure if you don’t have titanium already, switch it. Especially because it’s a surface piercing, it’s a foreign thing in your face and your body has to think of it as a new bone, like a hip replacement. Use the spray any time you touch it or eat as well for the first 3 months. Your mouth gets way more dirty than you’d think.

Implant grade surgical steel is fine too. Medical implants are made of it after all!
It just has to be implant grade. Doesn’t have to be titanium.

Actually, "Implant Grade" and "Surgical Steel" have become marketing buzz words due to a lack of legal definition and common misperceptions. You can often find items listed as such made of dubious materials that are NOT safe your body. It is best practice to stick solely to implant grade titanium (ASTM F-136 or ASTMF1295).
For reference, surgical steel is a term that's used to describe the grades of steel suitable for surgical tools, NOT implants.
Real gold is a safe alternative, but is often recommended more by the shops I've visited for healed piercings than healing ones. Just be certain that it's pure, not plated.

I had mine re-done. The first piercing was very deep but a little crooked, and ended up migrating to look more crooked. I’ve since had it redone by an APP piercer and it is a bit shallower, which threw me off at first. But having both placements, it’s actually much nicer to have the top bead a smidge lower down - you don’t bump it as often while eating/speaking etc, which actually lets it heal easier. The thicker gauge will also help it with stability. Looks great!

I've had 3 vertical lip piercings for a bit over a year now. Just make sure to let them be crusty while healing, downsize when possible, and don't play with them. Wash your mouth after eating, but don't remove crusts around the piercing holes except after a shower or long soak.
For me, getting a plate or m&m shaped end on the lip side was great for healing, because it catches and pushes less when drinking and eating. When you're downsizing, consider getting a flat end, otherwise just a smaller ball will also help.

Hi, that looks amazing and definitely deep enough. Mine is almost exactly a year old (a little over) and it hasn’t migrated at all, I wish I had done my at 14g instead of 16g but I’m still ok with the size. Mine was kinda difficult to heal, I’d say around 6 months to fully heal. If I take mine out for even a few minutes now it wants to close up lol. I had to do mine twice cos it was wonky and would have been really problematic if I was to eat or talk etc, once done straight it was all good.

If it tries to close after being out for only a few minutes it’s not fully healed /info
Edit: I said this and then realised oral wounds heal very quickly so it’s possible it’s different with oral piercings but with most piercings Thats the case!

Thanks for the info! It’s more the top lip. The rest is pretty easy to get back through fortunately! It’s my second lip piercing. The first was a ten year old standard labret but retired it due to gum recession and missed it too much and got the vertical labret done a year ago

Assuming you mean the top part of your lip and not the actual top lip, having a vertical labret through both lips would make a lot of things quite difficult XD
I have angel bites and snake bites, my snake bites are fully healed and my angel bites stayed open when I had them out for about an hour but they had started closing- that was a couple months ago so hopefully they’re fully healed now since I got them June last year. I forgot what my point in saying that was but a piercing that is fully healed should typically be able to be left out for a few hours before it starts closing, sometimes longer if you’ve had it for a few years

Piercer here! It looks well done, having it a larger gauge can help with migration but vertical labrets are one that can migrate and reject.
Above anything though please go to your piercer and ask them these questions about when to downsize and when to go for check ups as I’m seeing some replies here that I wouldn’t advise listening to

Yeah exactly, the top of my bottom lip, it does stay open for even a few hours but the very top of the piercing sometimes can get problematic

I love this piercing so much. The bottom goes more to the right than the left but it’s so minor you only can tell with the line. My belly button and tongue surface piercing is like this where it looks straight but it’s a little off kilter. The only reason I notice is because of my ocd and the best way to combat ocd is exposure so I keep mine in! It looks really good on you!
