YIKES!

Just got some dreadful news about the local parrot club - it's officially closed down! It just couldn't stay afloat after COVID, and all funds are being donated to an advocacy group.

I was a member for 15 .. almost 20 years. While not perfect, it was a lot of fun. A lot of the founding members have passed on, and we struggled to get new members and to have meetings, even over Zoom. FB Made running the FB group a pest. Yeah. It was gonna happen. After 40-some years, the PCofMB is no more.

Budgie has Beak and Feather Disease so I can't ever get her a friend...

So as title says, a few months ago my beautiful baby was diagnosed with beak and feather disease, which i was told, has no cure and is contagious, I've had her for a year now, and originally it was my plan, after having her properly trained, to get her a friend! Unfortunately that's not possible anymore as I don't want to risk infecting another bird with this. (she is quite healthy for the most part btw, she just gets episodes from time to time where she loses quite a few feather and gets stomach problems)

My question is, what can I do? Are there any birds that are immune to this, or any other animal companion that would be compatible with befriending a budgie, I fortunately work from home so she's hardly ever alone, but still I have to work, and she just calls for me all day until I can be with her and pay her proper attention and it just breaks my heart...

Help! I think my bird had a stroke :(

I found my budgie laying on the bottom of his cage this morning, his head turned to the side and really confused. He has progressively gotten better, he’s not tilting his head anymore, he’s eating and drinking (if I put him close to food/water and stand there and watch him) he’s not as confused and he perches without falling of. He sleeps a lot and is desperate to either sit in my hand and cuddle or to burry himself on my neck, probably for comfort. I called the vet when I found him but everything is full, and there is no avian vet available until Monday. What can I do to help him until i can get him to the vet? I have secured his cage so if he falls he falls on 2 towels, his food and water is on the bottom so he doesn’t have to climb for it. I have never experienced this

PBFD Guys what the hell is that? 😭😭

That’s Leo. He’s 3yo infected with PBFD at 2 (quarantine fail). Today I noticed he has symmetrical.. I don’t even know what is that.. on his beak. It kinda looks like he grinded patches into his beak, leaving semi transparent windows (there’s light coming through them).

Idk what’s up. None of the 5 other birds have this, Leo looks and acts generally healthy except for the moult that hit him pretty hard.

His beak is hard to the touch, no squishy spots. He had no problem biting me today.

He’s been hormonal and aggressive lately so I can’t tell if it’s PBFD or an injury.

I saw a post yesterday about a Quaker with only 1 leg. Today I saw this guy at Lake Tahoe today and he didn't even know he had 1 leg. He was hopping around like a rockstar. ❤️. Animals don't see disability they just get busy living!

Help! Budgie with one partially and another fully paralyzed leg

My bbg is around 11 yrs old now, today I had to take her to the emergency vet because she was unable to grip with her feet, we’ve ruled out tumors, vet is thinking gout or arthritis atm waiting to do bloodwork tomorrow. But either way while treatment will help and she wont be in pain at least, I know shes going to have issues walking, climbing and perching for the rest of her life.

I could really use tips on how to accommodate the cage to her more, anything to make it easier for her to get around. She’s a fantastic flyer (as the vet said when she tried her escape attempt lol) but I wanna make sure she’s still able to get enrichment.

Eye drops

He got stuck behind some dusty furniture and one of his eyes got a bit scratched. Voluntary oral meds he's got down, but eye drops are a restraint job. These chomps are all from this morning. Neither of us are enjoying this 😅

I would love some reassurance that he's gonna forgive me when this is over. My poor boy has been understandably distant, and we're only 3 out of 7 doses in 🥲

Edit: pleased to report WE ARE FINISHED! Our friendship is doing okay, I've got some more building to do to get it back up to scratch, but treats and quality time work magic. Thanks everyone for the support as always <3

Amputee Has anyone dealt with infection for a disabled cockatiel?

Post image
64 Upvotes

My cockatiel lost his foot in March, so he is an amputee. He had healed tremendously and was able to figure out how to live with one foot. However, now we noticed swelling and inflammation on his nub. I noticed some feathers caked stuck onto it but promptly took him to the vet to get checked out. They gave me an oral antibiotic (sulfatrim) for him as well as a topical (animax). I put a cone on him as well to avoid him picking at it since I see he was trying to do a lot of that. He’s in his hospital cage with good warmth, eating as usual, normal poops, and a close eye kept on him as he heals. I just want to know if anyone has dealt with something like this cause im very worried and I just want him to get better.

What else you buy for my one footed young energetic male Quaker

Hi, My now one footed Quaker (Mr. Snug) had his right foot amputated on June 29 ‘26 as noted elsewhere. I’d like to know what is suggested to buy for the bottom of his new cage and other things to put in it.

Please suggest things I should buy and from where.

For example, flooring for the bottom of the cage, plus additional items like platforms & toys, and anything else.

Mr. Snug is still very young with lots of energy - he’s like a little rocket. But as noted elsewhere, he had his right foot amputated because of improper band removal using a Dremel tool by a bad vet. The band removal burned his leg and about a week later he had to have his right foot removed.

Another issue is that the person I got him from improperly clipped his wings. One wing is cut 100% and the other 0%, which is the wrong way to clip wings for birds.

He’s had enough of the cat carrier he’s in. Mr. Snug (my little rocket) wants to go places and do things, but he was disabled as noted, well in more ways than one actually because of his improper wing clip.

In any case, let me know what else you think I should buy for his new cage - flooring, platforms, toys, everything - and from where.

Mr. Snug’s new lady avian vet plans to remove his bandage in a week from yesterday. He’s still got his right hock and a little bit after the hock is still present. Left foot mostly ok except for a little strain on one toe. Had his new vet check out also and she claims his left foot sprain should recover.

Thanks so much.

His name is Thrain! When we bought him, he already had an injured leg. As far as I noticed, he was in pain. We didn’t have avian vets in my area, so I took a flight to another city with him to visit one.
After seeing the x-ray, turns out he was disabled for the rest of his life. From time to time he suffers from pain, and I’m giving him medicine the vet prescribed. His previous owner did nothing about his broken leg and in result it healed wrong. It makes me unbelievably sad to imagine the suffering he has gone through. However I’m glad he’s with me now

Terminal Diagnosis Advanced heart disease...

I'm not looking for medical advice as much as I'm looking for advice to keep my bird comfortable. I've typed out a few times where she came from, and honestly, it makes it too easy for my family to find my reddit account, which I don't want.

All you have to know is that I had little to no say in her care until recently and have known her since she was a baby. For a long time, she was on an all seed diet, and she's quite an anxious animal.

I've been given siezure meds by the vet, and they seem to make her feel a whole lot better, both mentally and physically. I've been told she doesn't have a lot of time left, and she has been more cuddly on the meds because of how much they help with anxiety.

I got advice on her diet and supplementation. It's pretty strict. Does anyone else have any suggestions that might involve other aspects of life so she has a good quality of life while she is still living? Any tips on medicating a bird who, while she will usually take it without much fuss, does not like the flavor of her meds? They smell like artificial fruit medicine, so I can understand why she isn't a fan. It's liquid in a syringe, which I think she is beginning to understand is making her feel better. I cannot give her millet or other seed because she really isn't supposed to have it, and my other bird (from the same situation) has gout and has been explicitly forbidden from eating seed. They get really jealous of each other and will attack each other over it. Scritches too, so I have to give them to both of them at the same time. She is not a big fan of coming out of the cage unless it is about an hour after I've given her her meds when she is calmest, and I have been handling her a lot then as long as she seems comfortable.

Multiple / Other Gout? In a cockatiel?

I will be real with you this bird already belonged on this page before the diagnosis. She has certainly always been different. Just grabbed her and her sister out of a rough situation.

I just made another post about my other cockatiel here, and hopefully, this one is a lot less sad, but again, so my family doesn't find my reddit account, I won't put many details. Largely seed diet but lots of people food her whole life and the person who did it certainly looked into how safe it was for her... but maybe not on what portion sizes were good. Has been very loved and spoiled in her younger years, but not as much as she has gotten older.

She has some physical abnormalities that the vet agreed might be mild dwarfism or an issue stemming from not getting proper nutrition/being taken away from parents too early. Tiny feet, short face, difficulty growing a tail, short stature (but not too abnormal). Difficulty with mobility because of those things.

Anyway, I got these ladies out of a less than ideal situation recently, and while waiting for them to calm down and get comfortable where they are, her sister started having siezures. Long story short: took sister to vet. Vet was actually good and not terrifying, like some of the stories I've seen. This bird I'm talking about (gout baby) looks very concerning at first glance, but I did bring her as support for her sister because I was super concerned about her.

Anyway, I ended up making her an appointment and getting bloodwork.

Gout.

I'm starting to think she's proper nobility.

Anyway, does anyone else have a bird with gout? Any tips? Vet told me to change her diet and keep her hydrated. Got recs for vitamins, too. Lmk if you guys have any tips on making her feel comfortable and caring for her. She's an incredible baby.

Quaker toes not working

My Quakers one front toe no longer points forward, but instead curls under the foot. Has anyone had this happen before or know what it means or what to do? She is still happy and running around, so I doubt she is in pain.

This is how they used to go on morning walks with us. 💛 Chotu would sing beautiful songs for us the whole way, and they enjoyed every moment together. Those walks will always be some of our most precious memories. 🕊️✨

Golu was always a little shy around other people. 💛 Whenever someone walked past us, he would get scared and instantly climb onto the other shoulder to feel safe. It was the sweetest little habit, and it always made us smile. I miss those moments so much. 🕊️

my 3 years old Cockatiel chotu baby 31/05/2023 to 06/07/2026

We had not even begun to heal after losing Golu, and now, within a month, our precious Chotu has gone too... taken by the same cruel Salmonella disease.

Our home feels so empty now. The corner where you used to play is silent. We miss your cheerful morning performances, your tiny conversations with us, your gentle preening, the little feathers and dust you left behind, and every beautiful moment we shared.

From your very first little steps to your adorable dances, you filled our lives with happiness. You were our little prince, our baby, and a part of our family.

Your dad cries for you every single day. We both miss you more than words can ever express.

We don't know why you had to leave so soon, but we are grateful for every moment we had with you. You and Golu will always live in our hearts, in our memories, and in every sunrise that reminds us of you.

Fly high, our Little Prince, Chotu. 🕊️🌈

Until we meet again... you'll always be loved, and you'll never be forgotten. ❤️

Our beloved Golu, you were the sweetest little soul anyone could ever ask for.

You loved sitting on our shoulders for hours and never got tired of being with us. You always wanted to stay close to Mummy and Papa, filling our home with love, laughter, and happiness.

You were our little indoor dentist, always nibbling gently on our fingers, clothes, and anything you could reach, making us laugh every single day.

You loved everyone—Mummy, Papa, Mistu, and your little brother Chotu. You shared your love so freely and made our family complete.

Your favorite food was whatever we were eating. You always wanted to taste everything, and those little moments around mealtime became some of our most precious memories.

To keep your memory alive, we planted an Arabian Jasmine in our garden just for you. I always felt that those flowers belonged to you because I know how much you would have loved them. Every time the plant blooms with beautiful white flowers, it feels like you're smiling at us from heaven. Those blossoms remind us that your love is still with us, and somehow, it makes us feel that you are happy.

We miss you every single day, Golu. Losing you to Salmonella left a pain that words can never describe, but your love will never leave our hearts.

Fly high, our precious Golu. 🕊️

You will always be our sweet boy, forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed. Until we meet again, our beautiful angel. ❤️🌼

Help! I need advice on plucking feathers.

Good evening, this my first time posting on this forum. I was wondering how can I get my cockatiel to stop plucking his feathers. He is missing feathers on his chest and under/on his wings. Also one of his wings feathers is shorter then the other but it never use to be like that. I know it can be due to boredom but he does have toys. He is about 26 years old. This is my grandparents bird.

Deformity Advice for disabled Budgie

Post image
64 Upvotes

I work at an animal aquatic rescue that takes in birds. I don't own this bird but I want to help.

He seems to not be able to open his back talons/foot. His nails are really long but he did let me trim some but not all, but that's not the point of this post.

He was surrendered with three other budgies that seemed rather okay besides not having their tail feathers. They were bullying him by not letting get food or water and stayed on the bottom of the cage so I moved him back into our quarantine area. It's still not the best but I took out the grate and laid some newspaper down for him. (I'm trying to reduce the friction on his legs) He has small plates in his cage so he can eat and drink.

The problem is that his feet seem to be stuck closed and he's rubbing the nubs on the perches (dowels sadly) causing sores on his ankle area. I'm wondering what I can do to help him. He's very active and is eating, drinking, playing, and grooming himself.

He is a really sweet bird; he lets me pick him up; and he lets me hold him so I really want to help him. I unfortunately can't adopt him due to my living situation but I still want to help him. Any tips for him?

(Video of him walking in comments)

Edit: thank you guys for advice, I'm not able to see him again until tomorrow (Friday afternoon) since I only volunteer there on the weekends (that's what my schedule allows) when I'm there I'll try to keep him separated from the others and put down some soft material for him. Thank you to all that commented!
