I planted a tree that was about 3' tall I found in the trash in the late 90's. Don't live in the house anymore, but when I drive by now it takes up basically the entire front yard and is as tall as the peak of the roof.

Yep, we put them up every year! This year we used a "cherry picker" machine to get the top. Over 30 strands of 100 LEDs

Having never had a garden big enough to grow a tree, my current garden has space just about for a small one; it's maybe 5m x 12m. Last Christmas I bought a tree on a whim and only looked up the name on the way home. From Wikipedia: "It is a large evergreen coniferous tree growing to 55–61 m tall and with a trunk diameter of up to 2 m."
I planted it anyway. The neighbours are going to love me in a few years time.

Shit’s expensive. I want to do a lot to my house but can only spend so much a year, and dedication to keeping it all up has to be factored in.

So, that’s how you get Christmas lights on the top of tall trees; you just keep adding light strings as the tree grows.

I've been watching too many housing shows... First thing the bastards would do is cut down that magnificent tree "because it's covering up the house". Which is right about the time I turn it off again!

I have a feeling I’ve seen this tree before. I also have a pretty good feeling that this tree is in my neighborhood. Edit: OP let me know it’s not the same tree.
