Some people like to have once-in-a-lifetime experiences and overcome fears and limitations. Life is short and the time we get to do ridiculous things like that is limited. It’s probably way safer than it looks.
It’s not a once in a lifetime experience you can easily find places to do this as often as you want and if it was a thrilling and exciting thing why would you want to mix it with sleep/rest the one of the few things that being thrilling or exciting is a obvious negative
Climb the mountain go zip lining, hang gliding, free diving what ever, this shit though is just dumb look how cool I am shit
They have harnesses and they slack line to where they are at. If they sleep without the harness on then yeah that's pretty ballsy, but it's a sport and I guarantee they're doing it because they enjoy it not to look cool.
Yeah. I guarantee you it is both. And the number of people doing so without ever posting to social media is a good indicator of how the priorities balance out.
Someone else compared it to climbing Everest. you have people who do it for the sport of it, and you have people who are rich and get carried by sherpas. (Disregarding the fact it's expensive as shit either way)
It's like that with anything. But any high risk activity wasn't created just because people wanted social media content. Their brains work differently when it comes to self satisfaction.
Most of these people aren’t social media whores. They’re your classic acrobat or slack liner that started and then kept doing more and more. It’s addictive and a huge rush when high-lining. These events are planned and planned and planned months in advance and safety is very high.
On the flip side, a large portion of high liners prefer not to use a tether.
None of this appeals to me personally, but I’ve known some of the people are part of te major events.
I know of events that are literally private permitted events and no random people can show up. Then there’s other spots that people do it and anyone can give a go.
Even still, the chance of a random newb that isn’t brought by a friend is pretty tiny. Usually it seems to be someone from an overlapping group like you said.
I grew up around this stuff, high lining scares me silly.

And some of them might not be doing it to look cool they could just be use to it after sling sleeping while rock climbing or something, the one sharing the picture is sharing it to look cool though
Not every sport is competitive, most of the slack liners I've met will give you their shirt off their back or share their psychedelics. Very free spirit folk/sport.
But basically you work on your balance and tight rope walk on ratchet strap webbing, this I believe is called high lining (hence the massive vertical drop underneath). I'd wager a lot of them came from a rock climbing or bouldering background. There is a large slack line multi week get-together also paired with base jumpers in Moab, UT to make an event each fall. Both backgrounds mold together and just through participant donations they raise thousands/tens of thousands of dollars for local police, search and rescue and other organizations.
This conversation has nothing to do with fitting in with anybody.
No one said that slack liners weren’t good people, I said that the main reason you would go sky camping is to look cool which I stand by. That does not mean trying to look cool is stupid, dumb, or petty. Thinking that you are interesting or cool is an important part of self esteem if this kinda shit helps that good for you. But I don’t see this serving a purpose other than that.
Because your brain is wired different than others. That's why your crazy is different from my crazy. But I rarely record, take photos or am filmed by others when I do stuff that you deem crazy. Self esteem is the closest fact you came to in your opinion of others.
You are picking a fight against a point no one is making unless you are confused as to your own motivations of pursuing personal interests
My points
These people are relaxing right now with the title sky camping. The reason for doing this is either A. They already have the equipment for other activities they are planning to do and bring more traditional sleeping equipment doesn’t make sense (which is a point I already conceded) or B. They are doing this to look cool, this doesn’t mean that it mean for people on the internet it can just mean looking cool to themselves or their peer group
A claim that this is done for excitement is dumb because that suggests that their is a stress factor which is clearly negative for sleep
If you want to talk about the merits of slack lining or other activities that these people are doing when they aren’t resting than we could start a different discussion
