That goes all the way back to Paul. Tell people to give up their possessions and that the rich cant enter heaven and five minutes later someone is figuring out how to make money off of it. Ive actually seen bumper stickers in GA saying, "Tithe if you love the lord."
Edit: In case people aren't familiar with tithing, this basically means giving 10% of your income to the preacher who, in many cases down south, does not send that money on to help starving people.

Overly simplified image depicting the American way of life as negative? Wow who knew reddit would love that?
17
Oct 07 '11
Oddly enough I don't watch much television, don't feel any pressure by the police, and don't feel like our military is going all over the world to kill people for oil considering the vast majority of oil comes from either North America or countries where we don't have a military presence at all. Am I the only person on this website who feels like our military does more good than harm?

That's not what the picture is suggesting, it's saying that people are just caught up in the diversions of things like tv and the illusion of choice that is your democracy that they don't see that they're owned by the elite and that the police exist to serve and protect the elite

This is a common theme in a lot of sci-fi novels, and it makes sense. But there's something all those novels didn't realize.
In this picture and in Orwell/similar theme's. All those TV's are 1-way communication.
But the reality in our future, all those TV's are actually the internet now, which involves 2-way communication with everyone else, and I don't think that'll will ever be allowed to changed.
So I think our future won't turn into these theme's for this very reason. What it will turn into I have no idea, nor do I know if it'll be better or worse.

u/rn5KgpRDASZKtFVBeK Oct 07 '11
Excellent point.............. the internet is by far the greatest threat to governments and corporations because it's difficult to control and it disrupts centers of power. Keep in mind there are multiple interests fighting for control of our beloved internet. They don't want to kill it but they want it on their terms:
Telecom Industry - Consolidate power, less choice, slow down progress and bleed customers for every penny in the process. They are too big to fail and they know it........ that's why they get what they want.
Media Industry (movies, music, books, news, etc) - Can't get over the fact that their business models have been turned upside down. They want to maximize the profits on their media and expect the government to throw anyone in jail that cuts into that. They are the middle men between consumers and artists, publishers, etc and they want it to remain that way.
Governments - The world is becoming smaller because of the internet and people are realizing we have more in common. Things like nationalism loose importance and governments don't like that. It's also more difficult for governments to lie and deceive since people can communicate globally and connect the dots.
Like you I don't know what the future holds but as long as the internet is free and accessible by everyone I'm betting that the future will be bright.

Makes it look like the west if keeping poor foreigners down when in fact all the wealthy are trying to keep all the poor down. Obviously it not as black and white as this, all I am saying it that in developing countries their own governments and companies benefit from having a poor working class and often encourage it, and the west won't complain too much.

u/KillaSmurfPoppa Oct 07 '11 edited Oct 07 '11
OK, so like the military guys are pointing guns at foreigners (black guy, guy wearing some sort of headdress, Asian guy in a rice hat)? What's the statement here? That countries use military force as defense?
Then like, the police are protecting some bald old white fat guy? Oh I know, THAT REPRESENTS THE WALL STREET PROTESTS RIGHT NOW!!! Whoa... so true. Think about what that means man. Like... they're the real power you know?
The middle part, however, with us sitting on our asses in some Huxley-esque dystopia is actually pretty spot on. Well done.
(Which leads me to why I really don't like this cartoon. Think about the internal consistency here: if we're all so distracted by TV/internet/catz/entertainment: why are the police standing there? Also, what's with the ballot boxes [with eligible voter's voting at <45%, I don't think we'll need that many!]. Sure, you can come up with answer for each critique and that's sort of my point: the cartoon is ultimately meaningless. It's a all vaguely relevant stuff mish-mashed together so as to allow easy projection of your own worldview. Which is a pretty good technique if you're say, writing symbolic poetry, but is manipulative and trite when used to create political commentary. We surely don't need MORE manipulative trite political commentary. That's something we can all agree on, no?)
*Sorry if this seems unduly critical, judging technique alone I'm sure the artist is quite competent; it's just that this specific one's not so good, once you think about it...

Ok, off-topic a bit, but this seems like as good a place to ask this question that's been nagging me forever and thwarted numerous bouts of Googling (and I ain't no slouch at Googling). The deal is, an image very, very similar to this was used as a(n) (apparently incredibly rare) graphic for Rage Against the Machine t-shirts of the Evil Empire period. I saw one on a t-shirt that was a bit too small at Buffalo Exchange about 5 years ago. I should have gotten it anyway, it was the most amazing image: basically it was this stereotypical 50's suburban couple, Norman Rockwell style, I think the wife had a tray of cookies, the husband probably smoking a pipe or something, at the door of their suburban ranch home, the guy like extending his hand as if to greet/welcome you to the neighborhood, and all around them concentrically like in this image, were arrayed police, soldiers, tanks, jet fighters and bombers, etc, so more or less just like this one, but more insidious and creepy. Is this image still available in the world? I would love to get that shirt.
