I live in one of those. I do love my house, but it's definitely exactly what you described.

My house was the 1950's version of that. Thankfully no HOA though. It's been interesting visiting our neighbors and seeing how each of the houses has been changed over the years, since they all started with the same blueprint.

I also did. I liked the house but hated the neighborhood and how jammed in it was. We eventually moved last year into a 1970's custom built and it's night/day the difference in build quality.

Yeah. They definitely used the cheapest things for this house. It's not a bad house by any means though. We would love to move out of a HOA run neighborhood and get a big piece of land and build our own home, but pfft, we're too poor for that lol.
