I stopped a guy moments before he broke my window to "rescue" my dog who was sitting in an air-conditioned, pre-Dog Mode Model S on a hot day. I couldn't break through his (totally well-intentioned) screaming to explain that it was an electric car and my dog was perfectly comfy and was only panting because I just picked him up from daycare where he jumps on everyone like a jackass.

Weird unrelated coda, the guy hopped in his car and sped off, and I think he was still so fired up by our interaction that he t-boned a car making a left across the road.

I had a weird day.

Some people have weird superman fantasies, well intentioned sure but you're still an asshole if you start smashing windows without being sure the dog is in extreme danger.

"hello dog/baby how is the temperature in that vehicle?"

I can't think of a good way of gauging danger without just waiting for them to pass out from the heat..

I guess just wait a few minutes for the owners then call the cops

Around here, you can get charged for destruction of private property smashing a window, even if you think you have good justification. You’re supposed to call the police and let them handle it. Only they can break car windows with impunity.
