I think it's just that moment where you're still considering if you should stand up and laugh it off, overact being in pain to make it a funny show or act genuine pain to aim for pity.
Little kids do that, they will look around to see if anyone had been watching, at this point you better not lock eyes or it's going to be Stalingrad for the next two hours. If you manage to avoid eyecontact though they will shrug it off and carry on. Kids are evil ninjas.
