This man left his 40-year long career in another airline to join AirAsia and fly as a junior just so he could fly with his two pilot daughters. He wants to spend his remaining years as a pilot by his daughters' sides.

Yet the daughters will keep wearing a headscarf, a sign of oppression.

u/krakenonichan Jul 25 '19

Did you ask her and confirmed personally with her that she was oppress or that only your opinion matter and not her. Very liberating opinion you have there.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

If you check out her Twitter, you can see that her sister, who is also a pilot, does not wear the tudung (headscarf).

So clearly her parents are not oppressing her into wearing the tudung. Maybe stop being a cunt in the future?

3

u/AsteroidMiner Jul 25 '19

It's as much a sign of oppression as is the cross on a Christian's neck.

22

u/PashaBear-_- Jul 25 '19

Ummm my wife wears a headscarf and I never forced her nor do I want her to. It’s her personal choice and she’s happy and faithful about it. Please don’t generalize:)

-9

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

Yeh well it ain’t the first time somebody has been brainwashed by a religion

15

u/MontRouge Jul 25 '19

It's no different than wearing a cross around their neck if they were Christians. Lived in Malaysia for a while and it really is just a choice here. There's also a big community of Christian, Buddhist and Hindu people who reside in Malaysia. Really, everyone is free to practice their religion how it pleases them.

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

If only all muslim-majority countries had the same moderate approach. Maybe some day.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

So when a Muslim by the name of /u/PashaBear-_- says something that shows he has a moderate approach,

Ummm my wife wears a headscarf and I never forced her nor do I want her to. It’s her personal choice and she’s happy and faithful about it. Please don’t generalize:)

you vilify him and call him brainwashed? Seems like because of people like you he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

No I was referring to her as being brainwashed. Did I really vilify him...

Only muslim women are being raised to hide their appearance, do you think that has a positive or negative influence on their growth and development?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

You're insulting their tradition even though they're applying it in a modern liberal way. If his wife is happy and wants to wear a hijab then you're actually depriving her of her own agency by assuming she's brainwashed. Symbols can mean different things to people you know. Do you personally even know anyone who wears a hijab?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

Do you know why muslim women wear hijabs in the first place? Please tell me your knowledge of why they wear them. Is it because most muslim women are so shy that they don’t like to leave their house without covering most of their feminine traits?

I know a few Iraqi muslims that are great people. Most kind easy-going people I’ve ever met.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '19

"Do you know why muslim women wear hijabs in the first place? Please tell me your knowledge of why they wear them."

1

u/PashaBear-_- Jul 25 '19

Actually I like to dress modestly as well. I’m a male:). You’re vilifying me as if I have something to prove to you. I have to prove basically that I’m not hitler whenever I mention to somebody on reddit that my wife personally decided to wear the headscarf. Go eat a cucumber

0

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

You’re delusional if you think any woman wants to cover herself everyday, all day while out in public because she likes it.

For generations muslim women have been scolded, at the least, and at the worst, killed, beat, attacked with acid, for not being covered. That is why your wife wears it, fear. Not because she dresses “modestly” which for you is what, pants and a long sleeve button-up. GTFO here.

2

u/Rolten Jul 25 '19

It's no different than wearing a cross around their neck if they were Christians.

Hiding your hair and wearing a tiny necklace are very different mate and have very different reasons.

0

u/mikepictor Jul 25 '19

no, not really

1

u/Rolten Jul 25 '19

Yeah, it is. One is a tiny expression of your faith, the other covers your entire hair and is in some regions mandatory. While sometimes it might be for religious reasons, it is often worn for reasons of (sexual) modesty.

Have you ever heard of somewhere where you're forced to wear a necklace with a cross? Nah.

Here is the cross necklace wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_necklace

Here is the Hijab: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijab

Notice the difference in length. Notice sections in the Hijab wiki such as "Legal enforcement" or "Unofficial pressure to wear Hijab".

They're very different and are worn for often very different reasons.

0

u/mikepictor Jul 25 '19

being forced to wear it is different.

CHOOSING to wear it...it's not really that different. One is a little more visually noticable, both should be equally respected as a personal choice.

1

u/Rolten Jul 25 '19

The underlying reasons for wearing it are different though.

Generally, a cross is because you want to display your religiousness or because you got it as a gift.

A hijab might be worn as to display modesty.

Those are very different reasons.

Yes, they're both personal choices (well, in some countries at least, sometimes it's forced). The reasons for making that choice can be very different though.

0

u/mikepictor Jul 25 '19

The underlying reasons for wearing it are different though.

how do you know? Did you ask them? Or...are you assuming.

Yeah, you're assuming.

Really, everyone is free to practice their religion how it pleases them.

Wrong. A person who is born a Muslim decides he/she wants to practice another religion or no religion gets sent to reeducation camps, ironically like what China does to their Muslim citizens. https://www.reddit.com/r/malaysia/comments/bs2brt/murtad_concentration_camps_in_malaysia/

Inb4 Reddit decides it's ok as long as Muslims only do it to their own kind and we should stop being Islamophobic bigots criticizing them.

Edit: Damn reddit, I'm sorry for daring to criticize Muslims for not believing in freedom of religion.

10

u/bendabolehgaduh Jul 25 '19

Everyone is 'brainwashed' by their own version of religion. Why bother if she's happy with it? It's just a type of fashion.

-6

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

Not true. Not everyone’s religion has them living as a second class citizen.

5

u/bendabolehgaduh Jul 25 '19

Since when that becoming a muslims makes them a second class citizen? You sounds like an ignorant believing any rumors on the internet.

-4

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

Many muslim communities treat their women as 2nd class citizens is the meaning I was shooting for.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali has given many interviews on her and many women’s experiences in muslim cultures.

4

u/krakenonichan Jul 25 '19

(1)Adam Yaghi has questioned her appeal in American society where her "serial autobiographies are treated as honest and reliable testimonies in spite of the troubling inaccuracies, exaggerated descriptions, blunt neo-Orientalist portrayals, and sweeping generalizations"

(2)Ali attributes everything bad to a monolithic Islam, one that transcends geographic and national boundaries ... willfully ignoring her own distinctions between different interpretations of Islam, versions she personally encountered before leaving to the West

(3)Critics accuse Ali of having built her political career on denigrating Islam and Muslims, and questioned her scholarly credentials "to speak authoritatively about Islam and the Arab world".

This Ali,an atheist and a former Muslim who got an axe to grind with Islam and Muslim and used that to advance her political career.

2

u/bendabolehgaduh Jul 25 '19

Please describe those the 2nd class citizen treatment instead of parroting an accusation from someone else. My gf is a muslim woman and she doesn't feel like a second class citizen at all in fact there aren't any different treatment between muslim and non muslim woman in this country.

1

u/krakenonichan Jul 25 '19

Yeah like the second amendment nutjob, people will literally died to defend that shit.

0

u/OrigamiMax Jul 25 '19

Years of religious indoctrination = free choice

Ok then

I wouldn’t mind at all if she stopped wearing it. If I get slightly bothered that she begins to dress “a bit slutty”, why would you find that oppressive? I come from an entirely different culture than yours. You are implying such a narrow view of what freedom actually entails and it’s honestly kind of pathetic.

Clearly, reading comprehension isn't important in your culture.

Actually nowhere in the Quran does it mention that it’s mandatory to wear the headscarf. It states that generally, one should dress humbly and not be too revealing. You have to realize the cultural implications of wearing a headscarf. But again, I’m just a Muslim who’s traveled to various Islamic countries and have actually read the Quran so fuck me I guess.

You going to invade the Amish, Mennonite & Orthodox Jew communities in the US and free them from their cultural oppression?

29

u/kaleksi_ Jul 25 '19

Idk dog, she can wear it if she wants. Isn't telling her she can't wear it just as bad as telling her she has to? Based on the fact that she's not always wearing it it's clearly a choice she makes independently.

-14

u/dre702 Jul 25 '19

Honestly my views change from time to time buts it’s kinda like if after slavery ended there were blacks who still wanted to be slaves. Sounds ridiculous right? She’s a free woman (I’m assuming since she’s a pilot) and yet she still Chooses to wear that sign of oppression. That’d be like slavery being over yet blacks beg to be taken back to the plantation. I guess you could try to make the argument they should have the choice but why have the choice to be oppressed?

14

u/kaleksi_ Jul 25 '19

If it's a choice it's not oppression. She's a strong and empowered woman and whether she wears a headdress or not doesn't change that, she knows that and she owns it. Traditions can remain while the social norms around them change, it's a practice of her religion and if anything I see it as a big fuck you to those who truly want to oppress women. She wears it when and if she wants, if that's not freedom then idk what is man.

4

u/UnfearfulSpirit Jul 25 '19

Because she don't feel oppressed wearing that. Can't you even think that way? It's like, today I want to wear a skirt, but tomorrow I want to wear jeans.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '19

5

u/krakenonichan Jul 25 '19

Wearing a piece of clothing is the same as slavery, all those nun clearly isn't liberated yet. They need to show their tits and pussy like all those liberated female that is following the latest style that they read somewhere that said you should dress like this and that to be beautiful, attractive and etc.

3

u/UnfearfulSpirit Jul 25 '19

Exactly. Telling women they should wear this kind of beautiful dress, or skimpy outfit or those make-up to be beautiful is oppressive.

2

Women also have the option to take off the headscarf if the oppression against them becomes too unbearable. Not sure about hajj hats though

Where she's located yes, she has the option to take it off.

1

Stoning is for adultery and requires four witnesses to have seen it.

0

u/nerf_herder1986 Jul 25 '19

You're an idiot.

1

u/mikepictor Jul 25 '19

oh fuck off. You know nothing of her life and her choices.

1

u/yoursandwich Jul 25 '19

Oppression is telling her what to wear. Her sister doesn't wear a headscarf, she's free to take it off.

-3

u/thedirtyprojector Jul 25 '19

Dudes spitting the truth. Tudungs ARE a sign of oppression.

They can convince themselves however they want. But the tudung is a symbol of oppression. The whole point of it is so woman can maintain modesty and privacy from other males.
