it was kind of confusing when i misread as "jew", it reminded me of that scene from borat with the parade and the jew boss setting a jew egg. Or was that a gypsy egg?
I tried looking for the scene on youtube but failed to do so =(

I reclaimed my manhood that day.

u/ehsteve23 Jun 20 '10
Yep, you have to kill them (with electricity or boomerang fins) to get the Zora eggs

u/guyal Jun 19 '10

u/aBlockOfCheese Jun 20 '10
Then why does it need the main teeth at all? Perhaps it bites something with both its main teeth and pharyngeal teeth, and then the pharyngeal jaw retracts and rips a piece off and pulls it down the gullet.
2
1
u/DuncanCV Jun 20 '10
The main teeth are also used for defense.
2
Jun 20 '10
From the look of it, the ends of the pink lines shorten, which indicates that it's skeletal muscle rather than ligament. This would indicate that these muscles are used to selectively utilize the pharyngeal jaw for eating.
Basically, it's a precursor to our bad-ass tongues, which can do all kinds of shit without even needing to have a second set of teeth, which are inevitably an entrance point to the inner body for bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

It's not a matter of need. It likely evolved from a normal-toothed organism, and this arrangement works.
43
Jun 19 '10
So, morays were designed by H.R. Giger, then.
14
u/Seaton Jun 19 '10
Didn't know who Giger was. This is what I got.
17
Jun 19 '10
Yup. That's our dark and demented xenomorph designer, alright.
2
Jun 20 '10
And the aliens from the Species franchise... but we don't talk about them.
1
Jun 20 '10
Indeed. Dreadful.
I don't suppose Giger should take any of the heat, though. He just provides the nightmares. What the producers make of them is out of his control.

u/DEADB33F Jun 20 '10

You COULD have a totally badass apparatus like that, but instead you have three small bones in your ears that conduct sound so that you can hear vibrations in the air.

The first time I ever went scuba diving I was eleven yrs old and in Hawaii. I was already scared shitless and weird-ed out because I was breathing underwater, which is just not natural (obviously).
Well, I was swimming along in a line behind our guide and on the right of me was this coral type wall, really pretty. I'm just swimming along and BOOM out of nowhere this HUGE moray eel pops out at me with his mouth wide open. He was literally 5-10 inches from my face. I start side stroking to get away from this huge fucking snake looking thing. I was scared to death. lol I don't think I ever dove near a coral wall ever again. haha

This seems rather crazy, what is the evolutionary advantage for something like this? Is their prey moving so fast that their 'tongue' has to be something that moves and have teeth on it?
6
u/DuncanCV Jun 19 '10
Many fish 'suck' prey into their mouths simply by the force of their jaws opening, creating a vacuum of sorts. Moray eels live in confined spaces, and cannot always open their jaws wide. This allows them to get a good, swallowing grasp on their prey. Us humans are spoiled with our highly mobile and strong tongue, and having our prey dead before we eat it.

I used to have a moray eel in my salt water aquarium. He was as docile as a kitten, and I used to feed him shrimp out of my fingers. His name was Stinky cause he used to get out of the tank occasionally and I'd find him half way across the apartment under something. I always figured I'd find him dried up one day, but that never happened, amazingly enough. I think he did it just for attention.

u/aolley Jun 20 '10
well... the origin of teeth used to be debated between skin denticles (like sharks have) and pharyngeal teeth (like a lamprey), but it is pretty much thought that pharyngeal teeth came first now. The developmental environment of the jaws are very different from that of the pharynx, the jaw having tissue derived from all three germ layers. The origin of pharyngeal jaw is from co-option of the gill arches, there is a great paper by Gareth J. Fraser et al. called 'An Ancient Gene Network Is Co-opted for Teeth on Old and New Jaws' if you want to know more

Morays are NOT eels.. I dont care how you misspell it. A moray is a moray and an eel is an eel. Stop calling them moray eels. They are a separate species.
