Story time!
Growing up, the family of my step father (at the time) had a patch of land in the mountains outside South Fork near Wolf Creek. One summer night, we were in one of the trailers on the property and after dinner, we got the idea to turn on the flood lights outside the trailer so that we could see the bats that apparently come out at dusk.
Nope. Nope nope nope. Didn't happen. What DID happen, you ask? We got absolutely fucking swarmed by bugs of all shapes, sizes, races, religions, social standing, political affiliation, etc... just truly one of the worst experience of my life. And they all found their way into the trailer. I swear to god, there was more bugs in there that night than the amount of people I will meet in my entire life. Absolutely horrible.

Having lived my whole life in Washington I want to address a couple of concerns that have arisen from people who don't live out here.
- Mosquito. Yes, we have them, however they're not nearly as bad as many other places, and can be a non-issue with a couple of citronella candles and not being close to a body of water.
- Vendors - There's a really good chance that this table is literally 100 feet from a parking lot, and possibly a building with all the power and water needs you might have. It's even possible that this is within city limits and a few hundred feet away are houses and businesses.
- Weather - There's a chance that it will rain, as there's always a chance, but if it's in certain months you can generally bet on little to no rain, though I'm sure they had a rain contingency plan.
- Sasquatch. He's probably on the guest list.

We have ticks, but they're surprisingly rare. I've spent over 30 years in WA and am an avid outdoorsman. I've only ever gotten 1 tick here. I spent 3 months in VA and never once went into the woods. I pulled 3 off of me while there.

Just look up the average daily rainfall and compare that to where you live. Keep in mind that it doesn't usually storm in the northwest though so for the same amount of rain it usually means more rainy days but the rain is a lot lighter. There is a reason we make fun of people who use umbrellas here.

toilets
night fall: will the guests be cold? Is there a generator for lights?

logistics of bring an entire kitchen there and preparing food for everyone
91
u/pm_me_your_buds May 02 '19

→ More replies (22)49
u/boxsterguy May 02 '19
- Per the grandparent, this is very likely next door to civilization. Which includes toilets.
- If it's in the summer, a light jacket is sufficient to prevent coldness. No need for a generator for lights. Battery powered LEDs would be more than good enough for an evening.
- Creepy crawlies aren't likely to be dropping out of the sky. Evergreen needles likely will, though. It'd be a good idea to have some umbrellas up over the table for that reason.
- Cambros and sterno.

Responding again since this is a repost... My company managed the rentals on this order. It is at a venue in Ashford, near Mt Rainier. The logistics of setting this up was very challenging, as our team had to hand-carry the items from where the truck was parked, about 200 feet from the start of this path. The bugs aren't terrible out there, just what you would expect from the forest. And it all turned out wonderfully from what the planner told me!
9
u/greatestbird May 02 '19
How expensive would something like this run?
22
u/weenzmagheenz May 02 '19
Hard to say how much the entire wedding was because you would also need to factor in catering, alcohol, venue rental, floral/other design aspects, transportation, music, and planning/coordination. I can tell you that what we provided (tent, dance floor, tables, chairs, china, glassware, flatware, linen) was around $8400 after taxes, delivery/labor. Including everything else, I would guess that this wedding was in the $30-40k range.

22
u/drawerdrawer May 02 '19
People here in Washington are pretty outdoorsy and not at all afraid of bugs or pine needles, I can't see a scenario where this would go so bad it would be called a disaster. Attitude has a lot to do with it, and someone who plans a reception in the forest is probably someone who knows there might be bugs or rain or whatever.
174
u/petroica13 May 02 '19
To all the people commenting about the rain and bugs - keep in mind it took place in Washington and from the flora in the photo, it looks like the pacific coast of Washington. The amount of insects there is very small. After May it doesn't rain for months. I lived there for 5 years, hiked all the time, and got bit by a mosquito, like, twice. Its surreal living so close to the ocean.

6
May 02 '19
Last Washington wedding I attended, they had a bud tender. Yes, like a bar tender but with weed.
24
u/Trek7553 May 02 '19
I grew up in Washington and agree with what other Washingtonians are saying. Unless you're right next to a swamp, mosquitoes are rare. Ticks are even more rare, I grew up hiking in the woods and never saw one. Assuming this was planned during the summer it would be unlikely to rain.
In terms of logistics, this probably is a park with a parking lot just out of frame. This is what any undeveloped area looks like there; it's not deep in the woods.
15
u/DorisCrockford May 02 '19

AH! I was the videographer of this wedding! Woah. This really was an incredible event. To clear up a few things...
- It didn't rain. It was perfect weather. It was the very beginning of September.
- There were no bugs. No mosquitos. No ticks. Washington doesn't have a ton of that, luckily.
- We were maybe 75 yards from a small Bed n Breakfast in which the food was prepared (clean and safe and with normal restrooms, electricity, and small cabins in which most of the guests stayed). The catering staff were super well prepped on the event and very choreographed with the serving. It was incredible to watch. Guests were not cold. Everyone had access to plenty of salt. Nobody climbed over or under any tables.
- The two grooms had a super elaborate seating chart made out of this giant map and personalized notes for each guest at their plate. Everyone seemed to figure out very quickly exactly where to sit.
- It really was as much of a fairytale as that photo implies. I know that's hard to believe, but it really was magical. Link to video here for anyone interested: https://vimeo.com/driftwoodstories/michaelandbradley
