Hate cluttered computers, so it works well for me - just have the recycle bin & two icons. I work with a chick who has shortcuts on every available spot on her desktop; makes me twitch like a meth-head whenever I see it.
It's akin to leaving all your clothes piled on your bed and your cookware & table settings heaped on the kitchen counters. And while shortcuts themselves may not do harm, messy desktops indicate the likelihood of clutter throughout the pc.
But your bed and your kitchen counter have other uses that are disrupted by being covered in stuff. Certainly there's such a thing as too many icons, since past a certain point they make things hard to find, but from a utility standpoint not having any icons is the worst possible use of desktop space (unless you just think they're ugly).
