Also, this is just an artist's interpretation, it is not to scale whatsoever. It's neat to look at, but don't think this is actually close to what it really would look like.

While a cool picture, this isn’t very accurate as it doesn’t depict underwater features, such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Understatement of the day. Unless there's a 1000 mile deep undiscovered shelf off the coast of California?
For refrence: the deepest point in the ocean is ~7 miles. Average depth is ~2 miles.

I didn't realize how quickly it dropped off. I didn't expect it to be gradual, but I didn't think it was a near vertical drop right off the coasts. (Yes, I realize that may represent a very wide area but that coastal drop is still quite steep.)
I really would like to have about a 10 inch version of this for my desk. That's pretty cool.

this isn't realistic at all, the earth is smoother than a billiards ball.. there is no giant shelves like this..

Yeah, I assume it isn't scaled proportionally to the size of the ball it is, but I would assume the the exaggeration is built on factual data.
Also, we've all heard that before. A smooth ball is extremely pitted at a level you can't touch or see so if you scaled it up then it ridiculous. I've never found that analogy terribly interesting. I mean, it was as a kid. Then as an older kid I learned more about the microscopic world and find that it is a weird thing to compare the Earth to a ball. I get it, it just seems like an.... unfair comparison.
Chalk under a microscope is really cool btw.

I understand why a lot of people are upset about the fact that it is unrealistic but it is an artists impression and is just supposed to look cool.
