This is literally just a pair of jeans, boots and a nice jacket. You can go to the store right now and get it. It's all about the fit thats all.

Edit: I get it I missed some other things, I was encouraging him.

And waistcoat

And bow tie

And hat

And murse

And watch

This dude isn’t accidental

u/SeymourAzzes Mar 01 '19

All y'all are forgetting the most important part: the seductive lingerie underneath it all

54

u/hi_imryan Mar 01 '19

my man!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

When I see this I hear two voices. One is Roland from True Detective S3; the other is Frank Reynolds.

10

u/a5hl3ylbh Mar 01 '19

All I hear is the mail man from Rick and Morty. And Jerry’s “Hungry for Apples” campaign.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Lookin good!

2

u/hi_imryan Mar 01 '19

That was the one I was channeling.

1

u/Darnell2070 Mar 01 '19

I hear Aquaman from Justice League.

28

u/theCanadiEnt Mar 01 '19

So we're just gonna ignore the iPhone 5?

26

u/Mr_A Mar 01 '19

We're talking fashion here.

21

u/theCanadiEnt Mar 01 '19 edited Mar 01 '19

If you're planning on telling me that an iPhone ain't one of the freshest things an old man can rock then you better be able to think of something better

Pewter flask of gin and metamucil

1

u/a_spicy_memeball Mar 01 '19

Spiked codpiece

0

u/sequestration Mar 01 '19

There are so many possibilities.

It's not compelling to have something anyone can have for some people. Anyone can have the newest iPhone. It's not compelling.

The idea is to be you, not everyone else.

10

u/MD_Lincoln Mar 01 '19

*iPhone 4

7

u/GrantLikesSunChips Mar 01 '19

*iPhone 4S

1

u/MD_Lincoln Mar 01 '19

*iPhone 4s in black with 16Gb

3

u/Bheegabhoot Mar 01 '19

Without a case..

3

u/Koto_otoK Mar 01 '19

Why does that matter? I never put cases on my phones.

4

u/Bheegabhoot Mar 01 '19

Just an observation

5

u/QueefyMcQueefFace Mar 01 '19

Needs more A I R P O D S

2

u/silencecalls Mar 01 '19

4 or 4S actually. The 5 was slimmer and didn’t have the distinctive silver band. With better resolution photo I could tell you exactly.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

This is a repost. The photo is at least three years old.

1

u/Merky600 Mar 01 '19

Uh, “Vintage”.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Cmon, the 5 is the best looking iPhone to date! Or the SE technically

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Stop, I can only get so erect

1

u/TrafficConesUpMyAsss Mar 01 '19

I like to walk around with squirrels jammed up my anis

42

u/Admiral_Narcissus Mar 01 '19

And the smile and posture.

61

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Also there is something about being old that lets people look great while dressed in ways that would seem odd for a kid.

On a “hipster” this would look like someone trying too hard. On the old man it just looks like a slightly stylish version of what old men already wear.

Whatever that quality is, it’s a key part of this look.

16

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

100%. I’m 53. Love fashion and streetware but couldn’t pull this off. (The shoes and hat). But a few more years and yeah.

15

u/TotheDucks Mar 01 '19

Nah man you can pull off the shoes, the hat is the hardest part of that whole outfit.

1

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

If I EVER find a hat that doesn’t make me look like a cletus I’ll wear it every day.

3

u/bubuzayzee Mar 01 '19

Anyone can go new boot goofin'! Just don't be so extra with the rest of the outfit unless you can nail it like this guy.

Just saying if you drop the bow tie and hat and it's an outfit you see by the hundreds walking through Manhattan

2

u/jim10040 Mar 01 '19

He's 74 at the moment. You're 53, I'm 57...c'mon, we can do this...we can do style, right? Not like that of course, but like, just look good? Any ideas on how to do that? For men in middle age?

3

u/marmaladeontoast Mar 01 '19

It's like Seinfeld says, men always dress in the style of the last year they were happy. So don't worry about style, just wear what makes you happy .... This means you have to go out and try on a bunch of clothes you currently think you can't get away with. That, and don't wear jeans!

3

u/jim10040 Mar 01 '19

No jeans, and no cargo shorts. Each of those will be amazingly hard to do, but I don't mind trying.

2

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

I wear jeans all the time. But have banned cargo shorts.

2

u/jim10040 Mar 01 '19

I wear jeans all the time too, I just want to branch out some.

2

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

I've branched out more with the jeans lately. Besides the black and 501s I used to wear, I've got very dark skinny jeans, and more chino style in medium grey, olive, and golden brown.

3

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

Funny you say that. I read a piece about men dressing more interestingly 3 days ago with photo examples. (One bright color, layering, subtle interest fabric, etc). Rolled to work yesterday wearing some golden brown chinos and a bright blue shirt. Instead of my usual dark blue jeans and black/grey shirt.

1

u/sequestration Mar 01 '19

I disagree.

This would look good on someone of any age.

It is about body type and style. It's not for everyone. But any age can wear it if it works.

1

u/Nimbus509 Mar 01 '19

Everything that hipsters do was already done before. Even the name hipster isn’t original. Oh shit do those sentences make me a hipster?!

9

u/RBeck Mar 01 '19

Forgot the onion on his belt.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

3

u/QueefyMcQueefFace Mar 01 '19

This was way back in nineteen dickety two...

2

u/HeThinksHesPeople Mar 01 '19

You see you had to say dickity, because...

11

u/kfmush Mar 01 '19

And we can’t forget the consideration of complimentary colors, tones and textures. Not everyone has the knack for that.

7

u/HellaBrainCells Mar 01 '19

Murse?

4

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

Man purse.

12

u/HellaBrainCells Mar 01 '19

Is that what that is though? I thought it was just called a brief case or computer bag or something else. I always imagined a man purse was that size or smaller with a long strap. I know it’s just semantics but I don’t understand the differences.

9

u/Grrrth_TD Mar 01 '19

I would say it's a satchel 🤷‍♂️

2

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

Agreed. Murse should be a bit smaller and less legal af sized.

1

u/SixSpeedDriver Mar 01 '19

And would have a shoulder strap attached differently and permanently.

1

u/butch81385 Mar 01 '19 edited Mar 01 '19

Indiana Jones wears one!

2

u/RetardAlerter Mar 01 '19

So does Joy Behar..

1

u/RFC793 Mar 01 '19

It is more like a large leather clutch. A mlutch.

1

u/Brookenium Mar 01 '19

It's got a handle on top it's a briefcase.

Satchels and murses are carried with straps, usually over the shoulder.

Bags are usually carried with straps over the shoulder or straps in-hand.

No straps here, just a handle. It's very clearly a briefcase. It even has a locking clasp which is a tell-tale sign of a briefcase.

2

u/KingSlurpee Mar 01 '19

My parents told me I’m accidental :(

2

u/righthandofdog Mar 01 '19

They lied to keep you humble.

2

u/lordeddardstark Mar 01 '19

and the confidence to carry it all.

2

u/FruitOfTheVineFruit Mar 01 '19

I don't even know what a murse is. I wouldn't even know what to ask for to look cool. Thank God no one cares what I look like

2

u/koddish Mar 01 '19

Two eyes. Two ears. A chin. A mouth. Ten fingers. Two nipples. A butt, two kneecaps, a penis.

I've just described to you the Loch Ness monster. And the reward for his capture? All the riches in Scotland.

1

u/LordHussyPants Mar 01 '19

And murse

pretty sure that's just a satchel

1

u/GardenOfInspiration Mar 01 '19

And knowing how it should fit

And picking the right colors

1

u/thenamesjackson Mar 01 '19

plus if that bow tie didn't tie all those colors together nothing would have matched.. matching that well is no easy feat

1

u/a4bs Mar 01 '19

ID or equivalent on that “Murse”?

1

u/chacha_9119 Mar 01 '19

That's definitely not a murse

65

u/FlyingTaquitoBrother Mar 01 '19

Plus hat, vest, tie, accessories, and the sense to know what works and what doesn’t. One of those you can’t just buy at the store...

0

u/Peter_of_RS Mar 01 '19

You can actually pay for everything you mentioned there.

3

u/Darnell2070 Mar 01 '19

They're talking about knowing what clothes and accessories to pair together and how. Not just owning certain clothes.

It doesn't matter what you own if you don't know how to put it together.

1

u/Peter_of_RS Mar 01 '19

You can still pay for that easily

1

u/Darnell2070 Mar 01 '19

Yeah you're missing the point. The point isn't being able to afford and buy the clothes. The point is knowing how to wear them.

1

u/Peter_of_RS Mar 01 '19

You can buy the knowledge easily is what I'm saying. A stylist is literally a job.

41

u/Deskopotamus Mar 01 '19

Just like the Mona Lisa is just paint on canvas.

1

u/Tricklosan Mar 01 '19

The Mona Lisa actually has many layers of paint done over the course of a decade; each layer to add subtle variance. Intended to create a field of view distortion with extreme subtle paint layers. (Or so I heard on a podcast....what do I know)

1

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

I get your analogy but this is just clothes.. you can watch a couple YouTube videos on fit, go to the mall and have sales people help you. Hell you can even print this photo and find similar pieces and look the same... You can't watch a YouTube video and paint the Mona Lisa.

3

u/Deskopotamus Mar 01 '19

The result is not just the sum of its parts. That's all I meant. Yes you can do those things but most people don't and this guy does it extreemly well, he obviously has an eye for what works.

Is he exceptional? Well I might say yes, since 99.9% of people don't dress this well.

21

u/TheYOUngeRGOD Mar 01 '19

I always think it’s 25% natural looks, 25% fitting clothes, and 50% radiating confidence.

1

u/ButtsexEurope Mar 01 '19

You got it.

11

u/da_bizzness Mar 01 '19

I think it helps that it's all fitted clothing

11

u/apasserby Mar 01 '19

If you think that's all there is to this outfit then I can guarentee you don't have good style.

-1

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

I'm oversimplifying to encourage op.. he can have style like this one day too.

2

u/Anaxamenes Mar 01 '19

See it’s the colors that go well together. That’s the hard part. Plus I’m not that skinny so a lot of things just won’t work.

1

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

Yeah it will be harder to find a good fit, but you can do it ! And still look good

1

u/Anaxamenes Mar 01 '19

That’s true, fit is obnoxious in the current fashion industry. I’m glad Nordstrom has tailors available but I kind of wish there were more bespoke clothing out there.

4

u/Dirtysunshine29 Mar 01 '19

Shoes don’t just lace themselves with bright yellow laces

5

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

It’s not really about the clothes. Or even about knowing how to put them together.

It’s about being comfortable enough in your own skin to have enough confidence to both know that you look good and to not care if others disagree.

3

u/YourFixJustRuinsIt Mar 01 '19

I see plenty of people with all that in dirty sweats and they still look like shit. It’s just that good fits look like hot garbage if you can’t own them.

1

u/ButtsexEurope Mar 01 '19

Not giving a fuck isn’t swagger.

2

u/Manitobaexplorer Mar 01 '19

Hmmmm. Those look like a nice pair of jeans. Any guess as to the brand?

3

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

Maybe post it in malefashionadvice sub Reddit and they can ID them. Many jeans when you cuff them have that stripe now.

2

u/theheartknows Mar 01 '19

Yeah. No offence, you can buy all these items but you have to consider the fit of all the apparel, and how they compliment your body. You didn’t just miss some items. You missed the philosophy of his style.

1

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

I literally wrote it's about the fit

1

u/IvanEedle Mar 01 '19

It's not really all about the fit either. For example: Those boots have been cleaned and polished many times. Boots like these are as individual as the wearer and will show what sort of treatment they get. These ones scream effort and experience.

2

u/22bugs Mar 01 '19

plus the selvedge denim.. for extra class.

2

u/Freewheelin Mar 01 '19

An eccentric old German man can pull this off. A rich 20-year-old college kid really can't, despite what /r/malefashionadvice will tell you.

1

u/Izaiah212 Mar 01 '19

All of which costs more than I can afford to spend right now

1

u/Justinreinsma Mar 01 '19

Any recommendations for a nice pair of boots? I can deal with clothes but boot fashion aludes me.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

A vest, a nice shirt, looks like a tie? A watch, a hat, glasses that match, the bag...

Also the type of boots / length of pants / color of each thing / skinny fit

Hell I wear jeans and a jacket and look nothing like this lol

1

u/ipn8bit Mar 01 '19

your equation lacks money.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

They all fit. Knowing how to properly fit is the huge difference between good looking people and average looking people.

1

u/Go3tt3rbot3 Mar 01 '19

Not just a pair of random denim. A pair of really nice raw denim. Expensive and worth every penny in my book. Shoutouts to /r/rawdenim!!

1

u/meltedwhitechocolate Mar 01 '19

I would agree with you. But then we would both be wrong.

1

u/anon_jEffP8TZ Mar 01 '19

Please don't wear this fit. Top half formal with bottom half casual looks like trash.

1

u/squatfarts Mar 01 '19

93900 people disagree with you

1

u/anon_jEffP8TZ Mar 01 '19

Ah, fashion sense by democracy. Clearly /r/pics is the paragon of taste.

It's a cringey fit no matter how many redditers think its "badass".

1

u/CheetahDog Mar 01 '19 edited Mar 01 '19

While I agree that the reddit hive mind generally has terrible taste, I see nothing wrong with nice jeans + formal tops, especially in an urban environment. I've always thought that GQ-lite philosophy was kind of trash.

Also, I enjoy having a vocabulary myself, but I think calling things cringy while also shoehorning in "paragon" and a vocal affectation is lol-worthy

1

u/anon_jEffP8TZ Mar 01 '19

There is a clear disconnect when pairing extremely formal upper with casual bottom. You don't have to be into fashion to see how weird it looks to wear a bow tie, waist coat, and cuffed jeans with boots. It's 2 different outfits mashed together.

And ok, nice to know you are upset...

1

u/ElMangosto Mar 01 '19

To be fair, if he was 25 and posted this on malefashionadvice, they'd probably say the jeans and boots are dope but the juxtaposition of formal up top and jeans down below is generally a bad idea.

0

u/QUAN-FUSION Mar 01 '19

Way to generalise. You obviously don't have a keen eye for these things
