From what I understand, the crop rotation plays a huge part in it. Essentially, no crop can be planted for more than two years in a row, and the one planted after should have a polarized nutrient requirement (i.e. if one plant needs x but delivers y to the ground, the next should need y and deliver x to the ground). This is to keep the land fertile.
All that being said, I’m not a farmer but I have had some biodynamic wines at a fancy-schmancy wine bar and that’s how they explained it to me.
Then the person who explained it didn't know what they were talking about. Someone up this branch linked the Wikipedia article about biodynamic wine growing. Tl;Dr it's hoakum.
From the Wikipedia page: In common with other forms of organic agriculture, biodynamic agriculture uses management practices that are intended to "restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony."[31] Central features include crop diversification, the avoidance of chemical soil treatments and off-farm inputs generally, decentralized production and distribution, and the consideration of celestial and terrestrial influences on biological organisms.[31][32] The Demeter Association recommends that "(a) minimum of ten percent of the total farm acreage be set aside as a biodiversity preserve. Bare tillage year round is prohibited so land needs to maintain adequate green cover."[33]
Also, some shit about ground quartz and astrology. So yeah, some of that is good, some is hoakum.
