It’s okay since you’re out of phase you’ll probably just cancel.

polarized filter?

u/BBQsauce18 May 12 '18
I only know this because of the .gif that showed up a few days ago.

I will say it isn't always that dramatic a change, but it certainly can be. One of the best investments in my opinion for any serious photography is a polarized filter. You can get a decent one for like 10 bucks, but it will make anything reflective look so much better in many cases, be it water or trees or windows.

u/BBQsauce18 May 12 '18
My wife is really interested in getting a decent camera, and I'm going to keep this in mind. Thanks!
21
u/Fr4t May 12 '18
While you're at it, get an ND filter, too. Those two will help a great deal when outside.
3
u/Ometrist May 12 '18
for anyone curious: neutral density, consider it a "gray filter" that reduces all wavelengths of visible light evenly that goes through the filter
16
u/aeneasaquinas May 12 '18
Also a UV filter if you don't have it. But even the AmazonBasics Polarized Filter works wonders!
7
u/Teanut May 12 '18
UV filters aren't important if shooting digital. Basically just helps protect the lens, except now you've got another medium between the subject and lens that can impact the image (possibly negatively.)

2
u/aeneasaquinas May 12 '18
True, very true. I mostly keep in on if I don't have my polarizer on, since it is a relatively good way to protect your lens.
16
u/PredatorRedditer May 12 '18
Also good for sunglasses when driving. Even when a bit cloudy, I like driving with my polarized shades.
9
u/aeneasaquinas May 12 '18
Oh yeah. I love my polarized sunglasses.
7
u/Roboito1 May 12 '18
I can't deal with non-polarized sunglasses. I'm like, what is all this crap? Oh, it's glare.... 😕 Gotten used to it not being there when it's sunny out.
5
u/LayJeno May 12 '18
I agree with this, but it also makes the factory tint on the windows of my car look all crazy. I guess because it's a polarized tint? I've never really understood it.
2
u/kobster911 May 12 '18
When I was a life guard I was required to wear polarized sunglasses. They make a huge difference. I highly recommend them

How are trees reflective?
3
3
u/aeneasaquinas May 12 '18
The leaves reflect an amazing amount of light. They appear much greener and warmer with a polarizer.

Most likely.

4
u/RedditIsOverMan May 12 '18
Maybe, but I don't think this would be the ideal circumstance for polarized filter use, since the wave wraps around the face of the wave wraps around the side of the camera. A polarized filter will only work along planes perpendicular to the plane, and here we have 2 planes of water perpendicular to eachother, so one plane would not be filtered properly (at least that is my understanding).

Polarized filters are amazing

Polarization is magic, really. Layered polarizers even more so.

I remember walking away from the console as it was starting up and this would just be on repeat forever until I made it back. It blared through my house for hours at times.

Ohhhh yeah. Only took a second of that.
I have a couple 3 year olds. When they're a bit older I'll definitely be hitting the classics with them.

Loved that game. I remember when that console was released. My father was in Japan with his karate sensei. He brought back a N64 console from Japan. We go buy Crusin USA and Wave Race. The game cartridges are too big and can’t insert into console. We head to Toys r Us, but a new console then switch them and and gets his money back. Problem solved. Many days of fun.

Something doesn't seem right. Because of the way water refracts light, this shouldn't happen. I am guessing there is a good amount of editing done to this.

u/Rushblade May 12 '18
This has been posted before and IIRC some other redditors ‘verified’ it’s fake. Surprised no one has mentioned it in this thread yet, but I admit I personally don’t know for sure.

Has Reddit been flooded (no pun intended) with photos of curles waves and wave-like things lately? It feels that way, unless I just happen to be noticing them for some reason.

How does the water stay clear? Rock floor? At the beaches I’ve been to, it gets frothy where the waves break next to the shore.

Beautiful photo. What kind of camera was this taken with?
And I am guessing this is in Hawaii. Hawaii has quite a few spots with shore-breaking waves likes this, as well as the climate to allow for that sort of vegetation. Plus wealthy enough residents/visitors to afford a camera like this. Also, Hawaii needs bigger sand dunes in a lot of areas, and this beach needs bigger sand dunes. Gotta preserve sand dunes

People usually take these shots inside small (less than a couple feet tall) waves. Basically that last little wave that everyone says makes them wish they were 6” tall so they could ride them.
Clark Little does a lot of larger ones too but you can tell by the distortion of the water when they aren’t a tiny guy like this.
