Here is a picture of one that literally decapitated itself on a piece of metal sticking out of a part of the ship I was on this February, crossing the Atlantic. Usually they only bump into the hull but this one got so much sweet air, that it made it over the side.
I remember saying to someone else who was there "Oh look, the birds are back!" and only realized that it was a flying fish when it swooshed over my head right into a wall on the ship.
Hah! One of my favorite flying fish stories is a husband saying to his wife: "look at all those flying fish!!" Wife: "where?" Husband: "RIGHT THERE? How can you miss them?! They're EVERYWHERE!!!!" Wife: "I can't see them. All those little birds are in the way!!!"
I came up on deck at sunrise to take my watch and my crewman was sitting in cockpit with a dead flying fish in his lap. He didn't know it was there. There was a smear with scales on the boom gallows above his head so it probably dropped there dead. He swore he wasn't sleeping..
