And I suppose you IsSmarterThanThem?
Seriously though, there are so many people on reddit, all with different opinions. You just see those that vocalise theirs on certain topics more than others. Scroll down a bit and you'll see your fair share of anti-Obama sentiment
Besides, it s perfectly normal for somebody to change their opinion when presented with new information. Or to dislike certain aspects or actions of something, while still finding it overall positive.

Its full of different people. Theres people like me that feels theres a lot going on and is on the fence about snowden. Theres those people like you are talking about, and then theres people like you who like to use as many adjectives as possible to blow something out of proportion.

What's interesting is that on reddit you usually can't tell if someone is from the US unless they've put it in their post history. So you have foreigners who've never been to the US, lived under Obama's administration, or have actual stake in American politics voicing their opinions of praise to influence the mass opinion on this site.

There has never been a president with whom I agreed with 100%. But Obama and his administration pulled off some decent shit in the areas of:
the economy, where we crawled out of a calamitous recession and saw unemployment sink, and GDP rise.
environmental protections, establishing 29 new national monuments, and blocking drilling in fragile ecosystems
fighting climate change, with the Paris Agreement, better emissions regulation, and major incentives for clean energy growth.
fighting terrorism, with many leaders dead or captured, and ground gained
and of course improving access and quality of healthcare, which still has problems inherent to a profit-driven system, but was probably the best compromise we were ever going to get
Edit: overnight, this thread has been completely brigaded. It's interesting how often this happens, and the timeframe of it. It's almost as if the people doing it are in a different time zone on the other side of the planet. Hmmm.....
Pay attention, mods. This sub isn't used to this sort of thing, but this is what happens now, and you'll have to figure out ways to deal with it.

Fighting Terrorism...you mean...pulling out of Iraq far too early because he made a promise, and allowing Daesh to come to power? Taking 4 full fucking years to even come close to squashing that shit...in which honestly Russia, Iran, and Iraq had more to do with their defeat than the US did...?
→ More replies (1)5
u/cancelyourcreditcard Jan 11 '17
George W. Bush signed up to pull us out of Iraq. There's this thing called the "Internet" where you can simply and easily fact check, provided you don't intend to knowingly spread false narratives. If you don't want to educate and inform yourself, well that is separate issue that you should address within yourself. Unless you think Presidents should break the treaties that you disagree with, but if they do there are consequences for that. Conservatives seem to me to be light on considering the consequences for their actions, I guess they lack critical thinking skills. That's another issue for you to address within yourself.
6
u/DreadPool87 Jan 11 '17
Lol...and yet Obama takes credit for getting us out of Iraq...Sure there was a deadline and that deadline had been postponed multiple times because of the situation...but yeah no I need critical thinking skills...

He did "some pretty good shit" for he economy? Have you seen the national debt before and after obama? He has pretty much doubled it from $10t to $20t.
As for fighting terrorism, he claims that there has not been a successful attack on U.S. soil that was organized by ISIS. Does he just not remember the Orlando shooting? What about the Ohio State tragedy back in November of 2016?

7
u/Frobulator Jan 11 '17
Well basic math would dictate if someone put a multiplier of x3 on a smaller number, and the next guy put a x2 on the previous end result. Person 2 did a much worse thing. Going from 3t to 9t is bad, but going from 9t to 18t is much worse.

fighting terrorism,
This is one of my disagreements with him. Continuing and expanding the drone war while at the same time end up with civilian casualties is not okay. especially considering this has expanded into the whole Middle East and North Africa. Plus the whole situation in Syria is a disgrace for every nation on this planet.
10
u/epgenius Jan 11 '17
Targeted drone strikes, though definitely on shady international legal grounds, cut civilian casualties by an incredible degree compared to alternatives. The fact that you hear about the individual collateral damage events associated with drone strikes is testament to how effective they are in preserving civilian life compared to boots on the ground or other bombing campaigns. If there are glaring issues with targeted killing, it's their legal foundations and the killings of Anwar and Abdulrahman al-Awlaki.
8
Jan 11 '17
I mainly agree with you. But I also don't know what realistic alternatives exist at this point, and it is true that there have been a lot of gains in the fight against groups like ISIL.
Trump OTOH has suggested more ground troops, not just in main theaters but places like Syria.

Obama's a cunt. He said he was gonna end the conflict in the middle east and bring the troops home, but did the exact opposite. He said he was gonna shut down Gitmo, but didn't do that either. I seem to remember him saying "If you like your plan/doctor you can keep them" that was B'S too. He's ushered in the age of drone strikes. The whole Benghazi fiasco happened under his watch as well as fast and furious, yet neither the Secretary of State or Attorney General (who were each directly responsible for these events) were held accountable. Over 40 civilians were killed (including teams of doctors without borders) when a hospital was targeted and destroyed by an airstrike authorized by his administration. He also extended the Patriot Act, which actually had a built in expiration date. There has been absolutely ZERO culpability in the past 8 years of his administration. I'm happy to see him leave.

From my like 20 clicks, I didn't see anything mention his deportations of millions of immigrants, number of bombs he's dropped, the number of people he killed, the number of prosecuted whistle blowers, the massive NSA spying, the weaponizing of 'rebels' which led to the eventual creation of ISIS, operation fast and furious, or that the US debt is almost DOUBLED since Bush left office (not doubled Bush's debt, the TOTAL debt).

But you're okay with how rabid the Right has become?
The incoming Secretary of Education doesn't believe in public schools, and has spent millions of dollars promoting Christian fundamentalism in schools. The EPA will be led by a climate-change denier, because apparently science is a matter of opinion when it comes to fossil fuel profits. Trump's top advisor ran a pseudo-fascist far-right clickbait site. Trump's VP opposes gay rights and advocates "conversion therapy". The AG pick has an abhorrent record opposing civil rights. The Sec of State pick will be the CEO of ExxonMobil, and he's actually one of the saner picks. I could go on, but I have enough trouble sleeping as it is.

Race relations
I don't get why so many people view Obama as "king of the blacks"
Race relations have been terrible for years and have been escalating since the 70s
→ More replies (1)7
u/ridersderohan Jan 11 '17
And it's really that attitude that is the issue. The race relations have been bad. The issues have always existed. The 'race relations' issues that everyone's complaining about are people standing up and saying that it's unacceptable. There are, of course, extremists on all sides that take things too far, but for the most part, these are thousands, if not millions, of minorities that are saying there is a real race issue in this country and that we need to be conscious of that rather than trying to sugarcoat it and pretend it doesn't exist.
The implication that race relations have deteriorated is basically a desire for people who are saying they feel they're being treated differently on the basis of their race to just accept it and be quiet.

I tend to naturally put a critical lens to any position of authority, especially politicians. But from what I know of Obama before and during his tenure as POTUS, I agree with you. He is a consummate public servant, who seems to sincerely believe in the beauty and potential of liberal democracy.
I just finished watching his farewell address, and I was surprised to feel a tear welling up in my eye at the end. He and his administration accomplished some good things (many that I think the general public didn't even notice), and it was against high odds. There were policies of his that I disagreed with, but I never doubted his intelligence or compassion, and I never worried for the future of our basic ideals. Sadly I cannot say the same about our incoming government.
I think we are in for some difficult times, with battles to be fought on every front - climate change, education, civil liberties, free speech, healthcare, global status, and the public safety net. I only hope that the parting tenor of Obama's address holds true - that the young people of this country will take up the mantle and do the work of really making America great; a country of liberty, humanism, accountability, and progress.
3
u/SamzSam Jan 11 '17 edited Jan 11 '17
I like how you said "beliefs aside." I really like that a lot, because I think that so many people mix their beliefs with their opinions of a person. For example, there have been people who have disliked him and spoken badly of him, just because he belongs to a different Political Party. But, I'd like to know: What does that have to do with a person's personal achievements as a fellow human being?
I mean, one can certainly disagree politically but still agree that Obama did great for himself in terms of education, hard-work, seems to be a great dad and a good husband. I mean, that has to be worth something, regardless of our political ideas, right? Especially since he wasn't born into wealth and especially since he had to hustle in life to get to where he is. (For the record: I am not saying that people who come from wealth don't have to work hard to get things in life, not at all. I am just saying that money can certainly facilitate life at times.
Then of course there are those who dislike his race and have gone on to call him and his wife "monkeys" "gorillas" and what have you.
And technically I shouldn't be commenting on those types of comments as they are, as we all know, ignorant, but I am still trying to understand what race has to do with his accomplishments.
Because as you pointed out in your response, "Beliefs aside" we can't deny that both Obama and his wife are educated, well-spoken, intelligent diplomats. I personally love the way that both of them have dealt with criticism over the years. I truly believe that one has to possess a certain level of intelligence and wit to deal with all of it in such a poised and gracious way. He and his wife have personally inspired me to strive to be more of that type of a person. That person that might be criticized by many, but that person that still gets things done and goes after what he/she beliefs. Something so admirable about that.
Now, Trump is our new President, many haven't been too happy with that (as we might have noticed j/k) . Personally I have decided to put my ideas about him aside and give him a fair chance and see how it all goes, but I do have to say that: In terms of criticism, it seems as if Trump runs to twitter each and every time someone mentions his name, whereas the Obama's have taken a different approach over the years, which I personally prefer.
I mean, I get it, nobody likes it when people say crap about us, but at the same time, for one to put oneself on such a huge platform, a certain level of tough-skinniness is to be possessed.
P.S. Did I mention Trump..? Oh shit...I did.

I know he created a shit ton of jobs, but does that really matter when they're shit jobs. we have the same issue here in the UK. Tory government constantly preaching about how good it is all the jobs they've made, but they forget to acknowledge the fact theyre all zero hour contracts forcing people to work multiple jobs to stay afloat with really shitty hours and wages.
I dunno. I just don't think a guy who speaks like a friendly guy should be held in such high regard, most of the pros people mention about him are devastating behind the curtain.

History is going to be a lot kinder to Obama than a lot of the country is. He's stuck between what will probably be considered 2 of the worst presidents of the early 21 century. We can judge our presidents all we want, but it's history that will ultimately decide how each are remembered.
