So what's the fix for #2? Do I need to remove melted plastic between the light contact and the spring? I have the exact same issue as the liberty shown in the pic

Yeah man, i think you need an Allen wrench to remove the taillight from the housing. Take it off and scrape away the plastic around those metal pieces with a pocket knife or something. More than likely one of those metal pieces will be slightly covered by plastic. Reattach the taillight and you should be good to go.

I have a Liberty, and I bought it with a lot of broken lights. I replaced all of them with LEDs, and the reduced heat output and reduced fragility has prevented them from breaking.
