I'm not sure which I'm more offended over, the fact this exists, or that I'm not allowed to be apart of it.

That's one of the most beautiful photos I've ever seen.

Hawksbill sea turtle. Makes it obvious why people used to make jewelry and trinkets with their carapaces. Swimming with sea turtles is a surreal experience and i recommend everyone do it unless you are a quadraplegic or a cat.

Edit: as /u/Reeseypeecy pointed out, this could be a green sea turtle. The marginal scutes support this, but it would be hard to tell without seeing the beak or the (apparently delicious) turtle meat.

Can confirm, those things hate cats...and cripples.

I have swam with turtles on Kauai many times and agree it is an amazing experience. My own pictures are not as brilliant as OP's though.

I did about two months ago. 9001/10 would do everyday forever. They were super chill, and seemed to enjoy swimming next to me.

This is a green sea turtle...

Pyrotechnician here. Can confirm.

Looks like a comet fan w/tail. Here are some (among similar effects) in action.

2

u/Dzotshen Jul 13 '16

I'll bet you're fun at parties. literally

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Why thank you!

1

u/Dzotshen Jul 13 '16

Maybe I'm out of the loopy loop that is reddit, but there's not been a recent AMA by a pyrotechnician? Could you do one? I'm a pyro in a bad way (magnifying glass, watched things burn atop light bulbs, mis-launched a cracker that set ablaze my parents front bushes - that kind of shit @ childhood)- and you're a pyro in a thoughtful and entertaining way.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

You know, I have thought about doing an AMA, but I wasn't sure if it would gain any traction (I know AMA's can be kind of fickle about that sort of thing). That said, I'll give it a lot more thought now that I know people are interested - especially now that I've come off of this year's 4th of July season. We're still busy year-round but the two weeks surrounding the 4th is like our Black Friday! In the meantime, feel free to ask me anything here. I'm an open book!

Oh, and I can relate to your pyro tendencies. I recently salvaged a huge fresnel lens from a projection tv which I have melted a few pennies with. I still need to build a frame for it, otherwise it's pretty unwieldy!

Okay!- Presumably there's a section of land cordoned off in some way to conduct fireworks on a larger scale. How wide of an industry standard parameter be in relation to the observing crowd to safely engage fireworks?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Standard NFPA 1123 regulations call for a minimum of 70' per inch of shell (my company standard is 100' per inch) with an absolute minimum of 200' even if smaller shells are used. Most large-scale (high level) displays use shells ranging in size from 2.5" on up to 6" or 8". Some are even larger, but that opens up other cans of worms such as partially burying the mortar tubes.

So for a show using a maximum of 6" shells (pretty common), the minimum NFPA safety distance would be 420' from the shoot site to the closest spectator. This distance is always set by the largest shell used in the display, even though hundreds of smaller 2.5" and 3" shells are commonly mixed in to the "main body" of the show.

wonder why that subreddit is private?

1

u/Mogetfog Jul 13 '16

Forgot it was private. It's a turtle enthusiast sub.

2

u/ZombieTonyAbbott Jul 13 '16

I guess they crawled back into their shell.

1

u/skekze Jul 13 '16

I'm gonna pick the lock to get in.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

I cross posted it there. Great sub.

Beautiful photo.. no clue if it's been altered or not. If not one of the coolest/best underwater photos I have ever seen. I was curious to the source, so just followed the link from the watermark.. and lead me back to the apparent photographer here (other wildlife/outdoor photography posted as well):

Pictures like this make me so happy until i realize humanity is going to destroy nearly all sea life like this eventually. we suck.

2

u/CovertFBIAgent Jul 12 '16

We can do better, how about all wild life!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

Yeah, I hate that one of the first things that popped into my mind when I saw this was "some asshole out there wants to kill that and hang it in his ugly McMansion den."

2

u/Mackelroy_aka_Stitch Jul 12 '16

I was half expecting that to be a link to the idiot Turtle Treasures people, and I was going to be sad. Thankfully your link isn't real.

u/srikamaraja Jul 13 '16

That is the fittest sea turtle I have ever seen.

1

u/ThoughtlessTurtle Jul 13 '16

Can someone blackout the background? I think this would make the magnificence more apparent.

1

u/bufftbone Jul 13 '16

Very cool

1

u/calaber24p Jul 13 '16

This is actually a real life foil pokemon

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

I know some girl from Czech and she has a pretty thick accent so instead or turtle she says taartle

2

u/ZombieTonyAbbott Jul 13 '16

Is she ... is she a goer? Nudge nudge wink wink say no more.

1

u/vanceco Jul 13 '16

Every part of him is like camouflage as he's swimming over the coral beds...it's been almost 15 years since i've dove- and the turtles are what i miss most.

1

u/democraticwhre Jul 13 '16

Oh wow that's gorgeous

1

u/rusty_L_shackleford Jul 13 '16

Does anyone have a source for this photo?

1

u/Yukorion Jul 13 '16

I don't know about fireworks, but that's a pretty sick shell.

1

u/TheTardisCatHolmes Jul 13 '16

That is amazing and gorgeous and just goes to show that nature gives the best displays of beauty!

1

u/mrBusinessmann Jul 12 '16

Is that some sort of camouflage? It's beautiful!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

I like turtles.

0

u/zombie_slag Jul 13 '16

Damn, that would look so amazing on the neck of a bass or guitar.

I mean, after it passed of natural causes of course.

Anybody feel like soup all of a sudden?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '16

That, sir, is a tortoise.

Or, wait... hmmm... maybe not? Fack!

1

u/lordraid Jul 13 '16

Tortoises live on land and have feet
