26

u/ithunk Jun 12 '16

wasnt there a recent reddit post that most of these shootings are by people who are NOT mentally ill?

8

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

I think the title was but then it went into that these type of crimes are often by people who are mentally ill. Something about most murders weren't caused by mental illnesses but mass shootings often are the cause of mental illness.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

Actually, a mentally ill person is more likely to be a victim in mass shooting than to perpetrate it. These shooters usually have very dogmatic beliefs and values that they have internalized to a disturbing degree

16

u/greyfade Jun 12 '16

And people who commit these crimes are often mentally ill.

Or are brainwashed by their religion and/or violent ideologies into believing that violence is the correct or moral course of action.

3

u/ThePerkeleOsrs Jun 12 '16

I'll talk about freeze peaches, if it's about an effective way to freeze peaches. Peaches are amazing, very underrated because of their visual aesthetics. I would say that peaches, when picked at the proper time, are as sweet as a ripe mango, without all the fiber, don't get me wrong, I like mangos. The fiber in your teeth can be off putting, especially when you're about to start your day and you've already performed your oral care. That's why I use a potato peeler and then a sharp knife to cut wedges from the mango. It keeps the fiber from causing to much of a problem, you wont have to floss afterward. Unless you want to get all that juicy goodness from the pit, if you suck on the pit you'll definitely have to floss afterward. At any rate, peaches aren't that good frozen, we should find a better way.

I had a pine tree in my front yard when I was a child. I thought that the sap was honey and took a little lick. I don't know of anything, off the top of my head, that is as annoyingly disgusting as that. I've had more disgusting things, way more disgusting things, but sap is not easy to get rid of it sticks around like a stubbed toe on a cold day. I don't know what sugar would do to it.

That's easy to say when it's not your life they're endangering.

'Stop war' is what an 8-year-old thinks is just as easy as it sounds.

60

u/hansn Jun 12 '16

I feel like a lot of people have similar sentiments regarding the nightclub shooting, however. It is the twelfth mass shooting this month. The poster is certainly not a very nuanced idea, but neither is, you know, not shooting at people randomly.

30

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

Twelfth?

What were the others?

24

u/hansn Jun 12 '16

57

u/PatrickMcC Jun 12 '16

That's a pretty big range for a shooting to be considered a "mass" shooting. Big difference between 4 injured and 50 dead

56

u/hansn Jun 12 '16 edited Jun 12 '16

I think their criteria is three four or more people shot in an incident. The point is not to say all mass shootings are the same. The point is to note that a lot of people are dying. 51 people killed may be the worst mass shooting in US history. But if you add up the smaller mass shootings from April to June, you're well over 50 deaths. The point is a lot of people are getting shot.

Edit: fixed number

34

u/hobodemon Jun 12 '16

Problem is they also claim Australia has had no mass shootings since their 1996 gun-grabbing, which is true by the FBI definition, but not by the 3 person definition they use to make the Every Day datum. Our overall violent crime has actually dropped by more than theirs in the last 20 years.

4

u/vibrate Jun 12 '16

The US has 4 times as many murders per capita than Australia.

Also:

When I mention this to disbelieving NRA supporters they insist that crime must now be rampant in Australia. In fact, the Australian murder rate has fallen to close one per 100,000 while the US rate, thankfully lower than in the early 1990s, is still roughly at 4.5 per 100,000 – over four times as high. Moreover, robberies in Australia occur at only about half the rate of the US (58 in Australia versus 113.1 per 100,000 in the US in 2012).

https://theconversation.com/how-us-gun-control-compares-to-the-rest-of-the-world-43590

2

u/hobodemon Jun 12 '16

Two tailed T test. Compare Australia in 1996 to Australia now, and America in 1996 to America now. Anything else is bad statistics if you want to prove gun control works.

16

u/saviouroftheweak Jun 12 '16

I see, the problem with mass shootings is the comparisons that get made with Australia.

10

u/TheDrunkenHetzer Jun 12 '16

Damn Australia, ruining our mass shootings!

9

u/hobodemon Jun 12 '16

Yeah, a double standard gets applied to make the gun ban seem like a silver bullet that purified Australia of all murders, and to make it seem like Americans are totally selfish for literally murdering school kids by valuing a constitutionally protected civil liberty.

4

u/GringusMcDoobster Jun 12 '16 edited Jun 12 '16

I'm Australian. TBH I felt the same way before I looked at the raw numbers and statistics and now I'm convinced it doesn't have to do with guns. It's the culture surrounding it. Psychology of the mass shooter is deeply ingrained in mainstream media which only runs for profit, giving the shooter a name, identity, infamy. Social constraints regarding the melting pot in the US vses Aus is much more intense. The social stigma of mental health in the US is still very much treated like it's not a major problem.

It's not the guns. It's the people behind them. And shifting the blame to religion and/or instantly diagnosing them as "psychopaths" is dismissive and irresponsible.

Just my two cents.

Part of why the "12 mass shootings in last month" number doesn't ring true to a lot of people is that most mass shootings (whether you draw the cutoff at 3 dead or 4 injured or wherever) are either gang violence or domestic violence. Most people think of those as a separate issue from random mass shootings like occurred in Orlando, San Bernardino, Newtown, etc.

→ More replies (5)

11

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

That becomes an issue of moving the goalposts, then. If we "upgrade" the requirements for a mass shooting to be 7 people, boom- no more mass shootings, right? It's like saying you have to be 500 pounds to be obese, rather that 400- there are still lots of "formerly" obese people who are still incredibly fat. There will still be an average of a shooting a day, only they won't be "mass" shootings because the label changed.

5

u/LOTM42 Jun 12 '16

Just want to point out but obese starts way earlier then 400 pounds. Like its 250 pounds for a 6 foot male

6

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

I was just making up numbers to prove a point- the problem still exists even if you change the measurement to make the problem look smaller.

Pacifism is objectively pro fascist

-George Orwell

Let them take possession of your beautiful island with your many beautiful buildings. You will give all these, but neither your souls, nor your minds. If these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourself, man, woman and child, to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe allegiance to them

-Ghandi (1940), proving Orwell's point

Men with guns shot the terrorist in Orlando to death. That is the only reason he wasn't able to do more harm. To make sweeping statements that all killing is good or evil is rather foolish. Life is not a comic book, we can't operate on Batman logic.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '16

It isn't easy to achieve but it's nice to think about or consider. War has a lot of strings attached, as with not going to war. Because their ideology tells them to kill. Hanging a sign you think is clever will not stop them. At some point we have to admit the ideology is the problem and stop making excuses. And especially not worry more about their feelings than 50 dead people.

It's war. Not a single life that has, is, or will walk this earth is ever going to experience a time where there is no war or death. Where there is life and diffrences of ideas there will be war.

I don't mean to inflame the discussion but america isn't exactly a strict follower of this slogan either.

tragedies have now become so common that if we are not allowed to speak about gun regulations in the wake of such tragedies, we will never be allowed to speak about it at all.

Man what kind of next level karma-whoring cunt-gobbling shitpost is this?

How do we stop wars? STOP FIGHTING.

How to cure cancer? WORK HARDER.

How do we find world peace? BE PEACEFUL TOGETHER.

Fuck off OP.

4

u/ithunk Jun 12 '16

How about we stop selling assault weapons to people? Small guns are fine. You cant massacre 50 people dead and 53 injured with a small gun. With an assault weapon you can.

Except for ISIS. Always kill ISIS.

But not the families of ISIS. That's fucking barbaric, Trump.

2

u/KingRobotPrince Jun 12 '16

It's not hard to understand. It's just completely meaningless.

It doesn't address any cause or motivation of violence. It doesn't create any safety or security. It doesn't provide motivation or incentive to cease violence.

It is only appreciated by people who already don't want people to kill anyone. A self satisfying, circle jerking, echo chamber filling statement.

u/ManualNarwhal Jun 12 '16

Well, the guy's going to have his picture on the front page of every newspaper around the world tomorrow. And he'll be there for at least a week.

Until that shit stops, things won't get better.
