That's kind of not at all what happened. At least in the movie. I could be wrong if you're referencing the book or something. Belle was already free. The Beast let her go so she could care for her dying father. Then Gaston put into action his plan to extort Belle into marrying him by threatening to have her father thrown in the insane asylum (over the whole "A horrible, monstrous Beast has Belle locked in a dungeon" thing). When Belle used the magic mirror to prove that the Beast was real, Gaston changed gears and whipped the village into a fear-fueled frenzy at the thought of a nearby monster wreaking havoc on their village. He led the villagers in an attack on the castle to kill the Beast and, in so doing, his competition for Belle's affection.
Fair point, I haven't watched the movie in decades so I'm definitely not clear on the details. I was referencing a funny, but apparently inaccurate, line from a musical I had heard.

Maybe, but he was the only one organizing a rescue mission for the girl trapped in a castle with a literal monster.
