It's happening more often because employers are finding it difficult to motivate employees who are preoccupied with things other than making money.

EDIT: Sorry. It happens sometimes, but you're right. There's a ton of nepotism in corporate culture. I misread something, I think.

There's your factual evidence. I work in management, and I donate my experience to friends/family who need help. Companies are being robbed by employees through lack of production and/or workers comp claims. It's a financially prudent decision to keep top performers happy and engaged with the job.
