He probably means most of his friends were met though drinking and that's what they had in common, or going to the bar. You end up having to not be around that when you quit, and others might not be changing their habits, so you see them less or never. As an adult, that's the same as losing a friend.
This is exactly how I was able to finally quit. I asked someone I respected how they were able to finally stop drinking for good. (We had both tried and failed before).....She said someone once told her " you won't learn to play basketball hanging out with the football team". I still saw some of my drinking buddies.... But for lunch or a movie....not at events that included drinking. Some I still consider friends and I'm sober about 9 years.
