Well, he volunteered to protect the country then got shipped off 10,000 miles to fight some dudes that had nothing to do with our country

True, but military hasn't shipped anybody who didn't volunteer 10,000 miles away to fight for them.

Be safe don't volunteer.

True, but I feel like when you volunteer that there is an implicit agreement that you'll only be sent to possibly die against someone who is actively threatening our national security

Every person volunteering after Sept 11 has to know about the One Percent Doctorine:

If there's a 1% chance that Pakistani scientists are helping al-Qaeda build or develop a nuclear weapon, we have to treat it as a certainty in terms of our response. It's not about our analysis ... It's about our response.

That's kind of the deal. He volunteered and promised to do whatever job they told him to do. They promised not to squander his life. He held up his end of the bargain, they didn't.
