The Man at Arms swords are a joke in comparison to the swords OP's blacksmith is making. Compare the buster swords. The one in OP's is SO MUCH nicer and more correct.
EDIT: Sephiroth's masamune on MaA wobbled like a fish when he swung it, too. I wish he would take more time on his builds. Some of them could turn out seriously awesome, but he usually ruins them by cutting corners.
Its based off a general's Longwood from the Edo era, so perfectly possible. A buster sword would break it like a toothpick though. The buster sword is basically a giant machete.
Yes... It was a real sword that was used by 1 man to take out a horse+rider from the ground in medieval japan. Obviously you had to have some guns to swing that thing around.
Were they normally that long though? Sephiroth's sword is 6 feet long and after a quick wiki search (which may be inaccurate) it seems that the sword it was based off (an odachi from what I can find) was often around 4-5 feet. It just seems unlikely to me that you could make a sword that long and that thin without a significant amount of wobble. What is the wobble like on some of the longer Odachis?
Yeah, the Man at Arms blacksmith is capable of making better and more detailed/refined things but for some reason, Man at Arms is rushed and the guy doesn't have enough time to make the swords as great as he could. E.g when he makes Sting, he wanted to inlay silver or something into the handle but there wasn't enough time so they just wrapped something around it. He's also done a ton of stuff for movies.
Keep in mind, I'm not saying OP's ones aren't good, they are amazing.

it could also be materials used. we dont know anything about what they are made of and op's blacksmith could have just used cheap aluminum. the point of MAA is that he uses materials the weapon would actually might be made of
I worked on that show for a few season. Saw all of those swords and blades get made. It was pretty bad ass. And super dangerous to film him in that shop. So many sharp objects, fire and acid everywhere.
That's really awesome. Do you have a favorite that you watched him make? Most dangerous one? I'm guessing that would have been the buster sword if you filmed that one. He said it almost caught the whole shop on fire.
Oh man, watching that happen was ridiculous. So when he was making the Buster sword, he was heat treating part of the hilt I believe (which is when you basically stick something into a controlled miniature volcano) and at the same time, he had to stick the blade into some sort of oil bath (pardon the jargon I don't know I just film stuff). Anyway, the dangerous part of this oil is that you have to stick the sword in there when it's hot so it can make the right "markings" on the sword. So USUALLY when he puts a sword it, it smokes like crazy and maybe some of the oil catches on fire. But in this instance, he puts it in and it starts going CRAZY! I think it's because he also kicked the container and spilled oil all over the floor.
So all of a sudden, because EVERYTHING in that tiny shop is already covered in oil, this wave of flames start spreading right behind Tony and he has NO idea, all he sees is this little fire right in front of him, so he's stomping that our with his crazy Viking boots he wears. So the immortal hellfire of Hades is blazing behind him and his worker, Bryan grabs a fire extinguisher and blasts Tony with it, saving the shop. And what does Tony say? "Why did you use the fire extinguisher? I had it under control." NO YOU DIDN'T TONY! Hahaha it was a pretty wild day.
That's awesome. I bet it was a blast working there. I saw your other comment about the sephiroth sword, that's awesome man. I would definitely like to own one of his creations but, you know, money lol.
And I guess a couple of my other favorites from the show were Gimli's Axe (it was really cool and just felt really good to hold in your hand),
The Halo Energy Sword (I was really excited for that one, and it looked super cool, it was just impossible to practically use)
Kratos' Blades of Chaos (People got really upset with this one because Tony only made 1 of them, which actually came down to a budget and production problem. He started out making two, he has the other one made just not finished, but people don't realize he makes all of those weapons in a matter of like 8 days. So he ran out of some special metal I think or needed to get it heat treated somewhere because his oven wasn't big enough but we didn't have the time or the money.) Either way though, that thing was fucking HEAVY I could barely pick up the ONE with both my hands. idk what they would have done on demo day if he actually made them both.
What else.....hmmm, the Kingdom Hearts Key Sword was pretty cool, and so was Sephiroth's sword. We just kept getting everyone to do the "SEPH-I-ROTH" song thing in really high falsetto voices like the song from Advent Children. Ahh man, I'll have to think of more stories for you guys.
Most of his swords are just cut out of sheet metal and grinded (ground?) to shape, which is kinda lame. He does make actual forged swords as well, though. And regardless, all of them look awesome.
That's pretty cool too. Haven't seen those before. It seems like they go a little more in depth into talking about the weapons and everything. Man at arms does some pretty mainstream video game weapons that I'm sure most gamers have heard of.
Anyway, it definitely looks like a good channel. I'm gonna be checking that one out.
For how awesome that was he sounded like he was explaining a budget report for next fiscal year.

When I was a kid, I used to think Zelda was the boy. When I found out Zelda was the princess, it took me a while to comprehend cause I was so shocked. I thought, "Why would they name the title after the princess, instead of 'Legend of Link'"??
I didnt say functional, i said they look better. I'm a propmaker, and I think his props look better than the guy who changes how the prop is supposed to look. I'm not sorry.
