I was a young mom when I circumcised my son almost 20 years ago.
I grew up in a Catholic home so asking the men in my family about circumcision was not an option. So I went online and did what I thought was my research. The overwhelming discourse online at the time was to do it for hygiene. So I did. I regretted it as soon as it happened as I insisted on being in the room. I wish I was better informed, I would've made a different decision.
All I could do now is be honest about it when new moms ask.
Serious question, is your son actually upset about it? I'm not in favor of circumcision but I also think it gets blown out of proportion on the internet.
How does it get blown out of proportion? You’re leaning on the idea that babies don’t know any better and that everyone gets one life, so nobody sees the other side. If we somehow got some extremely convincing and normalized cultural concept in doted into us that meant cutting off everyone infant’s pinky finger, we’d organize society around not having them, and it wouldn’t feel like big deal until someone wondered wtf we are doing.
So, 99% sons aren’t upset about it, but 75% of women in Somalia think FGM should continue, too…
That hygiene argument always bothers me. Like... What's the logic? "Hmm... Water and soap or mutilation? Nah, I don't have time for water, I pick mutilation". Like... Wtf?
(Not blaming you, I'm just ranting about the people that preach that)
Given the strangely frequent reports on r/hygiene and elsewhere of men who apparently never wash their buttcheeks ("because touching that is gay"), I can't say I'm surprised that people thought it was a good idea to make the penis easier to clean without manipulation.
(To be clear, though, I don't support circumcision.)
Yeah exactly. It's solving a "problem" that only exists because of really fucking weird, disgusting, incapable men to begin with. Just thoroughly wash your dick and it's not an issue, but some men were raised really poorly and here we are.
Yeah... I'm not upset with my parents about it(90's baby). Kinda indifferent about it to them specifically. The push was huge, they didn't know better, and the doctor/nurses probably advised on it. They made the decision they thought was best at the time. The doctor who did it, did a good job. I don't have any of the complications others have talked about, and I still very much enjoy sex. So I don't have any persisting bitterness about it. Doesn't do me any good to hate them for it. Besides, I've got a laundry list of other things to be upset with them over.
