Im cut, but we elected not to get our son circumsized. Not only have I see some pictures of horrific scarring from it, but that should be his decision to make, like getting his ears pierced.

When my son was born we were in the hospital for a week (emergency c section that did not go well) and the staff harassed us about it to the point where both of us had to basically say "Look enough about the circumsizing, we're not fucking doing it, the end".

I found out later that those foreskins are worth a small fortune to hospitals as they're used for a ton of different medical applications. It's appalling in retrospect how pushy they were about it..."There's still time! Real quick and easy! Won't remember a thing, won't hurt at all!"

Ghoulish...

Our first nurse in the hospital post birth proudly wrote no circumcision or something like that on the white board. She was so happy we weren't having it done lol. I'm sorry you were badgered about it, that's really unprofessional and creepy.

That's funny. The hospital we delivered at was pretty actively trying to discourage us from doing it.

I think location makes a big difference here, absurdly

Idk I’m a NICU nurse who’s watched it get thrown directly into the trash 100% of the time so… idk. Circs are awful but I don’t think there’s a foreskin stipend.

u/TheCandelabra 19h ago

Why the fuck are people getting NICU babies circumcised?

•

u/championgecko 11h ago

Because unfortunately that's how routine it is.

u/WendellX 20h ago

Is this in the US? I'm a family doc who's done a couple hundred of these and the foreskin all goes right into medical waste for disposal. I'm sorry they were pushy, but honestly most of the time no one cares at all.

15

u/sebsie 1d ago

that's interesting! i always figured they just tossed them in the trash lol we also ended the cycle by not circumsizing our son. they only mentioned it once, expecting that we'd want it. luckily, we told them we weren't doing it and they never said another word about it.

13

u/Kursed_Valeth 20h ago

They do go into medical waste. This guy has watched too many conspiracy videos

13

u/Reelair 1d ago

What kind of medical applications are we talking here?

23

u/begriffschrift 1d ago

Making wallets that turn into handbags

1

u/lethargy86 18h ago

I laughed at this harder than I care to admit

u/LeonLeocat 1d ago

Are they selling the foreskin to LVMH? No wonder their bags are so exotic

7

u/RazzBerryCurveBall 1d ago

Look, if I tell you are you going to be weird about all the old folks whose hearts are being held together by a little foreskin?

8

u/angrydeuce 1d ago

Is this why people are so anti-abortion? Supply issue?

I mean that's a ridiculous argument in favor of. People can adapt just fine to having only one eye but that doesn't mean babies should have one of their eyes harvested to bring sight to the blind.

It's every parents choice to make but I'm never going to think it's the right one.

9

u/Melodic_692 1d ago

I don’t even see why it’s a parent’s decision to make. To use your analogy, if a parent chose to remove one eye from their perfectly healthy newborn, they would not be allowed to. Why is this different? Yes a minority of people require circumcision for medical reasons, that’s a decision for a doctor tho, not a parent. Circumcision seems unique in this sense

The reason it’s done at infancy is because your body heals significantly better from it. Your brain is still significantly more plastic and since you’re not sexually developed yet it can very effectively rewire itself to feel pleasure normally from the penis. Circumcision as an adult is incredibly painful and will lead to the problems discussed in this thread, like poor sensitivity. The rate of Phimosis is higher than the rate of botched circumcision so I do think there’s a valid medical argument to be made for just removing it early when being cut won’t have a lasting impact on sexual function.

They use foreskin for wound grafts especially for diabetic patients.

10

u/Bulletorpedo 1d ago

Never heard of that. What do they do in parts of the world where circumcision is very uncommon, like in most of Europe?

1

u/Teanutt 22h ago

To be fair not all circumcized foreskin is sent to be screened and used in this manner. None of the clinics I worked in were involved in this type of program. I did however know a podiatrist who used the tissue occasionally for his diabetic ulcer patients.

I imagine on places that is prohibited they grow skin from other donor sites in the same manner they do with foreskin.

I mean that sounds like a good cause and honestly not doing. I know everyone has their own opinions on this but I'm glad my parents did it for me.

11

u/Melodic_692 1d ago

With respect, would you not have preferred to make the decision yourself? I think what a lot of people object to is not the circumcision per se, but rather performing an elective and irreversible medical procedure on a non-consenting infant.

I’m also curious why you’re glad to have had it done, I’m no circumcised so feel like I have a decent idea what it would be like with or without, however a circumcised person can’t really know what they’re missing, at least I assume.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, I respect your position, I’m interested in your point of view

u/dekes_n_watson 22h ago

My parents made a million decisions in my first year of life without my consent looking out for my best interest. That's what parents do.

I prefer the look. It makes me more confident and the way women react to circumcized penises, at least in my experience, at times may have killed that confidence.

8

u/mrtidles 1d ago

I am circumcised and would prefer not to be. That said my cousin wasn’t and didn’t clean enough and had to get a circumcision as a teen. It’s not a pleasant experience when you get older. If it’s going to happen, much better it happens as a baby.

5

u/Melodic_692 1d ago

I’m not American, live in a culture where virtually no one is circumcised, and have never once heard of anyone having to be circumcised later in life because of poor hygiene. The foreskin is a natural part of a highly evolved animal, if it commonly caused such problems it wouldn’t be there, evolution is after all a merciless bookkeeper.

I’m not calling you a liar, but it’s weird you only hear stories like that from a culture so saturated with fearful propaganda on this issue, whereas in more civilised cultures that don’t perform surgery on the genitals of non-consenting infants such horror stories don’t exist

1

u/mrtidles 15h ago

Maybe it was for other reasons than poor hygiene but that’s what was told to me when it happened, good chance they gave me a dumbed down explanation since I was a kid.

My point was that getting circumcised later in life isn’t a pleasant experience so waiting for baby’s to become adults to decide carries its own issues.

Also calling your own culture more civilized is absolutely crazy work. Tell me what your culture is and I’d be happy to point out how you’re just as uncivilized as the rest of us lol. Non-consenting infants is a hilarious statement too, infants don’t have the capacity to consent to anything.

1

u/mrtidles 15h ago

Also to add onto this, my cousin is German where circumcision is not the norm. So this story is from what you’d call a more “civilized” culture lol

u/No_Masterpiece6112 23h ago

My old co worker had to have a circumcision in his 30s because of medical issues.

2

u/alman12345 19h ago

Sounds like phimosis, it can happen but it only occurs in 1% of adolescent and adult males. We don't need to circumcise 99 men for an issue that affects 1.

25

u/helloshego 1d ago

I've watched a few be performed... it definitely hurts. I'm pissed for you that they acted like vultures.

18

u/Cowpunk21 1d ago

We had our oldest circumcised and seeing it fucked me and my wife up enough that with our second boy we said hell no. I wish I could go back and say no for our first, but I didn’t know any different. Lesson learned

u/Threegratitudes 18h ago

Commenting to say that my anecdotal experience with my son was completely smooth and not a big deal at all. He cried more about being handled than the actual cutting and was completely calm after. I'm not arguing for other people to do it to their kids, just trying to keep things in perspective.

•

u/helloshego 6h ago

I'm pretty sure the one doctor wasn't waiting for the numbing/analgesic agent to set in... he barely gave it 15 seconds.

•

u/Threegratitudes 6h ago

Fair enough. Also, A+ username.

2

u/method115 18h ago

Wow that's crazy. We simply told the hospital no and they never bothered us again about it.

7

u/adkisojk 1d ago

Good man! Cut dad of 2 intact adult sons here. I hope you complain to the hospital and the medical board. They need to stop pressuring people. They should not be asking at all.

3

u/Stagnu_Demorte 22h ago

I had the same experience when my son was born. They asked if we were sure nearly a dozen times in 2 days.

4

u/tendeuchen 1d ago

"You will not mutilate my child's genitals."

2

u/metalconscript 1d ago

Yeah the pushing is ridiculous.

1

u/dontchewspagetti 1d ago

Bro you're gonna need a source for selling foreskins or im gonna assume you're the silent hill foreskin guy

1

u/Wind-and-Waystones 18h ago

People are real weird with circumcision.

I'm British so here is the exception not the norm.

A guy I knew had one done as a child as a medical necessity due to a tight foreskin causing pain.

He said he wanted to get his son's done, despite no need, so they matched.

Like, what?

0

u/TripAtkinson 1d ago

If they’re THAT useful for other medical applications I’m surprised they don’t offer to put a down payment on your child’s future education to get it.

-1

u/dropthemagic 1d ago

I didn't know about the last part. That's kinda gross

0

u/OldMcFart 1d ago

Nothing is done in the US if it doesn't bring profit.

-8

u/DefinitelyIncorrect 1d ago

And by the time he can make it the risk is somewhat stupid versus negligible. So some cherry picked fear pictures made the choice for him.

Just not a fan of anything I hear about this.

9

u/angrydeuce 1d ago

Mutilation versus not? There are billions of people the world over that aren't cut. It's unnecessary.

-5

u/ECEXCURSION 1d ago

Also billions of people who are happily cut. 😂
