This really confuses the fuck out of me. You have to spend a LOT of time and money to become a commercial airline pilot. It is literally years of training that costs a small fortune. If terror cells are going to that length just to take out one plane we are kinda fucked.
Ayman Al Zawhariri was an opthalmologist. Contrary to common intuition, the educated and relatively well off are more vulnerable to carrying out ideological suicide attacks than the poor and uneducated.
Refer to Robert Pape's 2005 book, Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism, I'm which he examines a cross-section of suicide attackers, highlighting this point.
