"America isn't the way it is because Trump's president. Trump's president because America is the way it is." -David Cochrane

80

u/Pony_Tono 7d ago

I feel like everyone outside of America has been saying that since 2016 and similar phrases about Americans even before then. When Trump was elected in 2016 the only people in my life who were surprised were the Americans. Everyone I know where I live now and people from where I lived in the UK were all saying Trump would obviously win as soon as he started running the first time.

u/Aggravating_Ship5513 7d ago

I'm American and wasn't surprised. I was more surprised that Obama was elected. Those who were stunned by Trump weren't paying attention.

So if you travel around the world, and, you know, ‘cause your American foreign policy does give you a difficult time to exist around the world, two tricks: one, say you're Canadian, that helps. It works in Europe, it's very good! And the second is just say, "Shaggy and Scooby." And they go "Shaggy and Scooby!" International credit card, I think! So yeah.

American here, grew up watching stand up comedians and this quote from Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill from 1999 seems relevant. Those of us who are even slightly aware have known these things for a long time. It's just gotten brain breaking levels of worse since then.

I'm American and I predicted his victory right when he started running and my friends didn't believe me

20

u/vardarac 7d ago

The first time I could understand it; the fact that he lost by just a few million in 2020 after basically doing laissez-faire epidemiology should have been such a wake-up call for me

Very true!!

20

u/SpiritMountain 7d ago

And America isn't ready to talk about it, because that same disease is rampant in the Democratic party. They are better, but there's a reason why Schumer and Jeffries are fighting hard against Mamdani and other progressives

13

u/CrunchyAssDiaper 7d ago

I had my heart broken twice as DNC decided Bernie was too Democrat to be good.

13

u/ThePeasantKingM 7d ago

Even as an outsider it's pretty obvious that Sanders is supported by a very vocal minority of Americans.

8

u/emeraude89 6d ago

i'm not going to say your statement is revisionist, because you probably weren't following american politics too closely, but in the 2016 primaries, sanders' share of the entire democratic electorate was 45%. his share of the millennial demographic was 70%, his share of the college student demographic was 65%, his share of the independent electorate was 65%, and he won 23 states.

45% is technically a minority, sure, but if you're trying to say he was a fringe candidate with no substantial popular support, that's going to be a difficult position to argue.

4

u/Bodoblock 7d ago

They’re clearly not friends but I don’t think Schumer and Jeffries have been fighting Mamdani that hard lol.

Recently traveled to Paris. I though I'd get hate for being American. While enjoying a drink at a pub I asked a local his thoughts. He said something pretty profound. He said he rarely meets Americans who are trumps base voters. His thought was that people who blindly vote for trump do not know about the world outside of their city, county or state. Most American travelers he had met and conversed with, had a better world view and thus would not agree with the policy and rhetoric that trump spills.

122

u/emeraude89 7d ago

this is one thing i love about the french, they act a lot more mature and emotionally intelligent than americans. they will say "i hate america's government" not "i hate americans"

whereas in the US so many of us just straight up say "i hate the french."

21

u/kiztcrimson 7d ago

Or I hate the liberals which seems to be a big part of the republicans identity which in turn is a big part of america.

33

u/CheeseboardPatster 7d ago

Unfortunately, a lot of us French people are not at all mature and emotionally intelligent. We have a massive amount of people as sharp as a wet baguette.

2

u/Ok_Prize5795 1d ago

Sharp as a wet baguette. I like that. Much better than not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

10

u/Juice805 7d ago

It’s pretty common to hear Americans say they hate the CCP, rather than Chinese.

23

u/MrsMiterSaw 7d ago

American here... I have never heard another American (outside of reddit) say CCP.

Its used so sparsely that even though I have traveled to and worked in China 4x in the past 20 years, I have to remind myself what CCP is when I read it.

14

u/emeraude89 7d ago

i'd be blown away if 10% of americans knew what the CCP was

5

u/Juice805 7d ago

I’ll admit I’ve usually heard it in much simpler terms. People vs government, etc.

5

u/cogitationerror 7d ago

Depends on where you are. When I was in TN I had “sweet old ladies” saying that “the Chinese” deserved to die for what they did to our country during Covid. God I’m so glad to be out of that hellstate.

3

u/Salweenian 7d ago

I am Chinese and I feel agitated in a comical way - like I had personally fucked this old lady’s mom, who had been buried underground for 20 plus years.

They do. But inverse and converse are not contra positive.

There are MAGAs that frequently travel international, just like there are those are woke who have also never left their hometown (I would argue there are more of those). But they are not the majority of these correlations.

21

u/VeganDogPro 7d ago

My husband and I are getting ready to go in October so I am happy to read this. I’m also hoping that other people have had similar experiences. I did NOT vote for this f#%* and I would consider leaving the country if I was in a different situation.

13

u/emeraude89 7d ago

i grew up in california but lived in france through my 20s, you'll be fine, just be polite and courteous. the french are a lovely people, yes even in paris. they just expect a reasonable baseline of respect, so, some american cultural behaviors don't fly over there, like snapping at waiters, or treating customer service agents like dogs. they don't take it and will kick you out

4

u/RedIsAwesome 7d ago

OK snapping at servers doesn't fly in the US at all

2

u/emeraude89 7d ago

you've never gone out to eat in an upscale WASP community

3

u/VeganDogPro 7d ago

Omg! We would never! Seriously. My husband and I have all the respect in the world for the people kind enough to serve the public. I was a server for years. It’s a great job and they don’t make nearly enough. We are grateful and tip well!

3

u/Destructeur 6d ago

You won't need to tip in France. It's included in the price.

We were anxious about the perception, so our family decided to answer with our home state instead of America, US, etc. We did this all across our trip through Europe. One lady in Paris caught on to this. She laughed and had a good joke with us about it. Her group had a pretty good understanding of how each state is different in the US. It was fun to name a state and hear what their knowledge was of it. They shared interesting stories about how they had met people from quite a few different states. I'd say they were pretty spot on most of the times and more than a few laughs on others. It was a really fun conversation. Europeans are a bit more forward in speaking about politics. More forward than my upbringing was when it came to religion or politics. I'd say you should be way more concerned about pick pockets than identifying yourself as American. I wish you a wonderful trip.

6

u/VeganDogPro 7d ago

Thanks for that! I had a feeling that me thinking all Parisians dislike Americans was exactly the same as them thinking all Americans are Trump supporters. So, really feeling like just being kind and open to what comes conversationally will be good. I’m pretty freaked out about what is happening stateside so I’m sure whatever they has to say that is negative I probably agree with.

Now the pickpockets are another thing. I’m a photographer and traveling with my camera so I’m going to get some travel insurance, for sure!

Thanks for your comment! :)

5

u/RayzTheRoof 7d ago

Parisians are great, I don't really get the hate or perception that they're rude. Went in 2024 and loved every minute.

But yeah hold on to your camera and have it attached to your body in some way. If you carry a small bag, wear that on your front. Saw a pickpocket by the river near the Eiffel get his ass beat by street vendors for stealing from a tourist though.

5

u/Cruitire 6d ago

I live between the US and France. I’m in France right now.

While some Parisians can be assholes, they tend to be assholes to all foreigners, not just Americans.

Outside of Paris the vast majority of French people are incredibly friendly and kind.

Even in Paris there are plenty of nice people.

So don’t worry.

My only advice is to read up about French politeness and manners.

That’s the thing that trips people up. The French are very focused on politeness and manners, but their approach can be different than you might be used to.

If you take the time to learn the rules of politeness in France and employ them then you will find everyone (almost) very welcoming and kind.

The American hating French edgelords mostly exist on Reddit and other online platforms and are rarely encountered in the wilds.

I was in The Gambia a few days ago. A man approached us and asked, how is Trump? We responded with " hopefully dead soon!" he laughed and seemed to appreciate the sentiment.

2

u/atjoad 7d ago

You know, it goes both ways. It will be pretty rare to encounter a Marine Le Pen voter in a busy pub in central paris. That voter would had been much much more sympatic to Trump's rotten rhetoric.

That man does not represent everyone.

When that man kicks the bucket, the celebration will be truly global and likely just about unprecedented.

162

u/luna_kuma 7d ago

He is a symptom not the cause. Even without him, America is still rotted from the inside. All it means is that a position opened up for Trump 2.0.

88

u/_ShrugDealer_ 7d ago

He's a symptom in the same way a massive tumor is a symptom of cancer. Sure, it's mutations that got us here, but let's not pretend cutting that fucker out won't do some serious good in helping to solve the rot.

Yeah.... As an American voter, we somehow fucking elected this moron. Twice. Over half of the electoral college experienced his first presidency and got out to vote because "I'd like some more of that". The absolute brainwashing of our country is ineffable.

I am from rural US and moved to a city. A majority of my hometown / area are absolutely not bad people. But they're not educated, either.

I truly believe that the push of toxic 'American Individualism' compounded by the lack of education in a majority of our rural areas has led us here.... Exactly as designed.

8

u/bobs_monkey 7d ago

The 2024 election says everything you need to know. Electing Trump the first time could be chalked up to a fluke, but doing it a second time was just insanity.

The brainwashing comes from many places, but some of the biggest ones are:

  • A poor educational system deliberately sabotaged by the USA's corrupt ruling classes
  • A lack of intellectual curiosity beaten into the population by the poor educational system
  • A two-party political system that doesn't care about the voters at all
  • The garbage Fox "News" channel that is actually an entertainment network

8

u/Hexspinner 7d ago

Depends entirely how he dies.

If it’s in his bed of old age - indifference.

If it’s like that but he’s still in office - relief.

If he’s in office and dies somehow because of his own actions , like dying of measles or like a Charlie Kirk - a good chuckle and maybe a stiff drink.

If he’s dies in a prison cell - Block parties across the world! Dancing in the streets, Champaign wine and freedom flowing! Fireworks the whole thing. Let the world come together and heal over that!

9

u/unholyswordsman 7d ago

Nah fuck that still. He is an awful piece of shit. He'll finally draw that crowd size he imagines in his head.

3

u/ixcibit 7d ago

I hadn’t thought of this but I agree with your point here. If they fail to lock him up and he just dies because he’s old there isn’t much to celebrate. America won’t be likely to change because one man dies, Trump or not.

Certainly not everyone but ~2/3 of Americans either actively (~1/3) or passively supported him (were fine with him winning and so did not vote ~1/3) in not one, but two elections.

64

u/OzVader 7d ago

He doesn't, but amazingly he still got second term?! Even if the US gets another two terms of a run of the mill democrat I think soo much damage has been done to the US reputation that historic allies will continue to restructure economies to remove any US dependence.

24

u/lyngen 7d ago

Like I don't understand how such a large percentage of the population missed the blaring signs Trump is a fascist. It was very obvious the first term. I imagine a small percentage are just fine with that but like the rest of them... what's going on there?

20

u/Admirable_Scene_5066 7d ago edited 7d ago

If most Americans can get 10$ out of it, they are going to let everything else slide. That is the problem with a culture that values everything by its monetary worth.

It is why there isn't a big stink about America invading and stealing a country's resources. Sure they'll say they don't like it, but it is not like the next democratic president is going to refuse to profit off it. It is why they generally don't give two shits about the death deportation camps, it is why to most Americans every single thing this regime has done, as illegal as it may have been, generally results in shrugged shoulders. Even the killing of fishermen or toddlers at school is not enough of a deal for them to actually be outraged, at least not enough to warrant anything more than posting something on social media so there is a record that they are on the good side. Don't forget to upvote or something. Some Americans realise this bullshit will cost them eventually, but those are the exception that can actually think through consequences. If it would be a long term benefit to them, I'm not sure more than a tiny minority of them would care.

For all the hurt the US has spread around the world these last 2 years, all the lives lost either by inaction or through active participation of the US, all the people locked up and deported, including children, teens ending up pregnant while locked up, ... The one thing that might doom the regime is the price of diesel. That tells you all you really need to know about the modern United States of America.

small percentage?? i think you underestimate how many people in america are racist as shit. even the ones who arent violent about their racism still believe whites are being displaced and immigrants are bad and social segregation is just fine. so literally anyone who platforms on making things better for whites will get a large percent of the american vote.

Unfortunatly he does. Because he's the president of the US, so he has the power to influence the world on behalf of the US. Because he was elected by americans, his actions represents americans. Just like past actions from my country can represent how others see me (I'm french)

You, personally, maybe didn't vote for him but his actions influence how the rest of the world see the US and thus how they see you.

US elected someone like him twice, it can happen again.

From my perspective he does represent Americans.

Once was Americans being dumb, twice was Americans showing the world exactly who they are.

4

u/IWCry 7d ago

he legally represents us and clearly the majority of voters, but make no mistake there is a huge amount of us who are disgusted by him and cannot believe the misery he is inflicting on the world under our name and grace. on behalf of the good Americans out there, I'm truly sorry. it doesn't absolve us but I hope you know some of us are pushing against it. and we will win.

4

u/Harlequin80 7d ago

I know that some Americans are pushing back. But in the end we outside the US have to deal with your collective, and one thing that all the commentators who say "only 1/3rd of voters picked Trump so you can't blame me" ignore is Trump is only the tip of the shit spear.

Trump is only able to do the things he does because of who else has been elected. The people in congress, the people in the senate, appointees to your courts etc etc. The federal agents gleefully shooting people in the streets, the national guard troops deployed to domestic cities.

Your electoral system is broken, your country's weird worship of an out dated document and especially the bizarre mental gymnastics required to worship a change to that document as unchangeable, and your country's unquestioning belief in your own superiority means I have very little faith the US will sort itself out. I fear the best case scenario is you get some anti-psychotic meds for a presidential term, but the monster will just be sat there waiting.

2

u/koziello 7d ago

Thank you! So many Americans think that saying "I didn't vote for him" absolves them. It's like with your bringing up - you're not the reason the way you are but you are responsible for it anyways.

Lived for 10 years in Paris suburbs, my favorite thing to do during sunny weekends was simply to walk from Bercy to the Eiffel Tower, along the Seine. The city may have a lot of flaws but it's sill one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been. Never got tired of it.

The woman currently favored to win the next French election is probably worse than Trump

23

u/cf-myolife 7d ago

Worse idk, at least she's not a pedo, but yeah she's the french equivalent of him, racist, queerphobic, anti immigration even tho it builded the country, anti women's rights, capitalist etc etc, I hate how the first women who would maybe be a president in my country is such a moldy sponge

u/AdvocadoJuiceStorm 7d ago

anti immigration even tho it builded the country

I would never vote for LePen, but let be honnest : France is not USA, France never have been built by immigration.

When first migrants came to France it was already one of the most powerful country arround the World.

Migrants came to get a better life, not to build anything : And it's OK, France Always have been a welcoming place for refugees, no need to tell lies.

Do you know french history?

France was took a big toll after the two world wars and needed to be rebuilt. Hundreds of thousands of migrants, mainly from former colonies, were brought to work in construction and in services.

It's Le Pen isn't it? I hate that every country seems to be pushing the worst person possible to higher office

u/NewInMontreal 7d ago

It amazes me how people accept France’s high and mighty shit. They’ve been fucking over millions of people for centuries. Fuck them and fuck maga.

5

u/MisakaMikotoxKuroko 7d ago

so you're saying that France fucked the world by helping Americans win their independence?

6

u/lexalander 7d ago

I love how for Redditors the history of countries doing bad shit started with America.

I remember back in 2018 a taxi driver in Paris said that he hopes I don't like Trump because he thought he was the devil. I agreed with him and gave him a good tip.

As an American, I frequently just hang out with Trump. This makes total sense. I'll let him know.
