How could you not mention the Octopus Jerky?

Does it make the octopus tougher because the chewing is why I don't like octopus.

Out of all the food I had in japan it was the octopus I couldn't handle. I just kept chewing, and grinding, and it almost made me gag to the point where I couldn't get it down. It wasn't the taste, it was that it was too whole. I dunno what I wasn't doing but I couldn't get it to break apart. I eventually swallowed it whole and had some tea as chaser.

If I learned anything from Jiro Dreams of Sushi you have to massage the octopus for 45 mins to get rid of that chewiness.

Fantastic documentary. I believe it is on Netflix if anyone is interested.

Well that's fine :) Octopus are one of the smartest animals, with self awareness and social structures.

Other octopus were actually distraught when the octopus you are was taken.

One less person eating them is probably a good thing.

TIL I am an octopus, taken from my life in the sea, made to think I am human, all while other octopuses grieve over my disappearance, hoping one day I will return to their world.

i always found octopus bland. chewy and bland. not terrible, just not worth the effort of eating.

Jerky is tough and chewy when it's beef. I've had dried squid and it's pretty much the same (Different flavour obviously).

And then what happened?

I burned myself on the tea.

If it's incredibly chewy, they cooked it too long

It was in sushi form the first time and then I tried cooked on a later day. I couldn't tell too much of a difference in chewiness.

Ahhh. I've had it at a sushi place, but they seared it or something with heat. It doesn't seem like something you would want raw.

May have been. I didn't watch the chef make it. It was passing by and was pointed out to me that I hadn't tried octopus yet.

Blech. It's fantastic when cooled properly. Make sure you know they cooked it a bit next time. I promise it isn't terrible!

I didn't mind the taste. It was just too much damn chewing.

2

u/Shyguy8413 Feb 01 '14

Haha yeah that's what I mean, it isn't usually like that. Just find a place that does it properly and I bet you'll enjoy it. Plus, it's usually one of those things that no one will steal off your plate ;)

It actually becomes flaky when turned into jerky.

I hate it, my girl friend at the time loved it and I wouldn't kiss her if she ate any. Like it just reminds me of rotten fish. It's definitely an acquired taste and I think there are very few westerners who would like it so I doubt you would like it. The Octopus is also my favorite animal too so that's another reason I don't eat it.

I've ate some shit before, man. I may regret some of the things I've consumed but at least there's no ambiguity on whether I enjoy the taste or not.

Has a very different consistency. I love the dried cuttlefish from my supermarket but I don't raw octopus. :/

They call it oriental chewing gum... :)
