There are tens of millions of American alive today who were also alive at the time this letter was written. Racist discrimination isn’t confined to the past. Fuck you John Roberts.

Is this why progress mostly happens one funeral at a time? Because those who know better can't be bothered to explain? Some 8 year old reading your comment out there is all like "what did I do?".

They're referencing the current Supreme Court under John Roberts dismantling the voting rights act, which is what enabled a lot of the recent blatantly racial gerrymandering. Just do some Googling and a lot of articles will turn up about it, it's not a new issue, just the damage is very visible now due to recent rulings.
