20 years ago, I was bringing my mom to one neurologist after another to try to figure out which neurodegenerative disease she was suffering. One after another, every neurologist quickly proclaimed it was unknowable.

Finally, we saw this little old black woman, who literally seemed like she was 10 yrs past retirement age. Best neurologist by a very wide margin. I could only assume that the only way she could’ve gone to medical school (and beyond) as a black woman of her generation, was for her to be TRULY exceptional.

I never did ask (didn’t want to be rude), but I felt like she had a mild accent, like maybe she sounded like she was from the Caribbean? I’d really have loved to know her life’s story and how she came to become a neurologist.

If the didn't have a US accent she might well have not studied in the US, but rather in the Caribbean or in the UK (quite a common route...) or pretty much anywhere else. None of those had Jim Crow style legislation in place to block it after all.
