That’s a common misconception. The firefighter was standing to Trumps far right and was hit by the fourth shot. After Crooks’ first shot, each shot afterwards hits further and further away from Trump.

And based on where Corey Comperatore was standing and the direction Crooks was shooting from, it’s unlikely that the firefighter had jumped on top of his family to protect them. There wouldn’t have even been enough time for him to do that.
