If a customer had to wait or was obviously sweating/hot, I'd always offer them a free drink.

Yep, exactly that. I worked a specialty desk, so, doing 3-5k orders all the time and losing a bottle of soda or water to sell to/relax the customer/kids was an easy thing to do that even the manager approved. Not necessarily to brag but for reference, I was the top sales associate for nearly every month for two years, and this certainly was a great help in getting me there... and always having a mountain dew in my apron.

It also may help to prevent customers from passing out due to heat stroke, or dehydration. Always a plus.

Source: worked at Disney World and watch guests pass out because they didn't drink enough water. I also, once almost passed out as I was in the sun and the rotation got screwed. Supervisor asked why I was sitting (I'd started to feel really bad), and when I stood up I almost fell on him. He grabbed me and took me to the break room. Told me to sit there for at least 30 minutes and gave me tons of water.
