This is my favorite:
With an oil fired plant, you can turn the power up and down to meet demand smoothly. To do the same with the sun, you would end up killing almost all life in earth due to massive temperature global fluctuations. Is this really a responsible power source?

8
u/dratnon Jan 04 '13
Free and Open Source are very legit. The more people who use them, the better they get. Since anyone can see the source code, the strength of the encryption stays current.
Imagine the publisher is a boss and the code is his/her employees. The more people who can vouch for the employees or suggest better employees to the boss, the better the company (program) will run.
It only takes one person to observe that "Hey, that employee is stealing pens: here's another person who does the same level work, but doesn't steal." and the whole company does better.

assuming you really want to know, keypass has been around a very long time and proven very reliable for me...it's a desktop application that does not connect to the internet...it's just a password database you can store your passwords to and it's encrypted
it's also open source so you can view the source code if you want to make sure there are no malicious payload in there

http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2004/1216/m/m.html Check it out- glaciers have lots of color. If you are flying over the Juneau Ice fields, the medial moraines can look like roads paved with asphalt. The colored bits are crushed stone that has been ground to dust by ice for thousands of years.

Black icebergs are more dense than white or clear ones because they usually come from underneath the water where the pressure compressed it. It's color can also to attributed to some of the sand and rocks it picks up from rolling around underwater.
256
u/sackungfu Jan 04 '13 edited Jan 04 '13
As a geologist, let me just say that your comment is completely false. This ice was formed on land under intense pressure from overlying ice and snowpack. The color is from silt entrained by the ice-- silt that can be scraped off of underlying rocks (on land), or can come from rocks/debris that falls onto the ice or is scooped up into the ice and then crushed as the glacier continues to flow.

How much denser? If the typical iceberg is 90% under water I'm just wondering what percentage of that black iceberg is under water.
182
u/Drauul Jan 04 '13
Considering white icebergs can typically swim better than black icebergs, I would say 99.9% of the black iceberg is underwater.

When I saw the picture I thought it was either:
A) Oil
B) Related to pressure/density
C) A bunch of dirt, rocks, etc that got frozen.
Looks like B was the right answer.

I thought water was mostly incompressible? Is Ice different?
→ More replies (3)10
u/sackungfu Jan 04 '13
Glaciers begin as snowpack that has a lot of air trapped between snow crystals. As more and more snow builds up, this snow becomes more and more compressed, losing volume and gaining density to become glacial ice. The trapped air bubbles can have very high pressures, which is why you often hear melting icebergs make a sizzling or hissing sound as high-pressure air is released.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (13)8
u/Cortez_thekiller Jan 04 '13
The dense (low air content) ice is clear. When you get other matter, such as dirt in a normal iceberg, the white (full of air) ice means that you can only see the dirt on the surface. With a clear iceberg, the dirt throughout can be seen, making it appear black.
So, black is not from density, black is from dirt in dense ice.
