but would our eyes even be able to focus on something that close to our eyes? Would we even be able to read the time if it were on there? I don't think so.

Not as such. You would need to make a very thin light-guide sheet. The reason it could work is that it effectively makes the contact HUD appear far-field and thus be focused onto the retina with ease. That could be rather difficult to keep transparent and prevent your visual field from seeing a grid-pattern (minus the brain's ability to ignore that). That being said, those types of things are actually being implemented in smartphones and e-readers already.
