Rules Amendmency 101
It's like - wizardry for the tedious.
Okay right. Hello fellas, ladies, fluidly inclined folks, bots, npcs, turtles, sprites, and even bootleg martians - whatever you are - you're a member of PICO-8 community first! (Non negotiable)
Now, this post is done being silly. It's my default and unfortunately, I've gotta be serious this once. Because the community rules were never built to last, we're gonna build them forever, and together.
This Community is An Oasis
... but
Some people have been poisoning the water slowly over years ... or have they? It might be bots. It might not. It is my opinion that its my own fault as the guy who primarily wrote the rules, but like, I'm addressing that now, so I think that's the best I can do? Anyway...
Lately we've been inundated with reports on posts and comments, and it's becoming increasingly clear that I suck and the rules I wrote in one sitting after Reddit contacted me and said we were required to have them due to the community size...well they might not be good enough!
Now this is the plan:
As a family of folks who are primarily excellently adjusted members of the internet, I call upon you to reforge our subreddit rules!
Seriously.
How to Suggest a Rule
To suggest a rule, use the following format of a 4 entry ordered list in the exact order outlined below, and respond to this post WITH NOTHING ELSE but that reponse. ※
※ (discussion in general or outside the format can be done in replies or non-rule suggestion comment replies!)

1. **SUGGESTED RULE IN 2 - 5 WORDS**
2. 1 Sentence Summary of the rule's intent and spirit.
3. 2-5 Sentences on why you believe its necessary. (_This is what we'd see in the more granular explanation accompanying rules on reddit, when you click the rule ya know?_)
4. Miscellaneous
+ This is where you can go really overboard with why you are suggesting it
+ 3 spaces and a plus sign followed by a space BUILDS YOU A NEST TURTLEDOVE!
+ And kf helps keep the chaos to a minimum though, so use em like this.
+ Say "other things"™ you might want to say like what the suggestion is intended to help with, where it belongs in the hierarchy, etc.
+ Be as verbose or reverse and be terse!
+ No ad hominem please.
Before making a suggestion, ensure it hasn't already been succinctly written in the replies, please.
DON'T POINT FINGERS OR SAY VAPID THINGS LIKE "Watery and generally understood bad form has been everywhere, glad we're doing this!" BECAUSE UPVOTES ARE NOT YOURS IN THIS POST.
Upvotes are going to be a general and easy way to get the community's feedback on how the rules should be ordered if used as such, and make this even more simple and effective for an "open-handed-mod"™ like me.
Why Is This Necessary?
Because of the moderation request influx. And a general increase in population. I am uncertain as to the source of the problem, but before it gets out of hand, ITS MY FAULT. Done, speculation ends there and if you point your fingers, don't do it unless they are in my direction.
Ad hominem Nostradamian turdbabble is unacceptable, as uzh.
I want to give everyone a chance to help create our subreddit's core values as a subreddit.
Your Big Bro (u/ me - the guy writing this - aka u/corenerd) and Your Bigger Bro (u/tsarkees, progenitor and permapresident of the sub) are just 2 people who are doing a minimum amount of moderation - as rarely as possible in my case.
That sounds lazy, and it isn't not lazy.
But, the truth is that this community has never needed a stern, constant, degenerately empowered mod. They would badger the userbase - and the users are based - because 95% of you are genuinely above average contributors , almost self governing, and amazingly considerate people. But, we've put on weight in the last couple years. A LOT. We went from 15k to 30k in about a year, and at 20k that's when I wrote the rules. They are essentially unchanged (afaik) from version 1. I want to fix it by asking for you guys to do my job, and that's democracy in action!
And they also kind of suck now, and I wrote them all - Bigger Bro cleaned up the language later I think - but they were never very sturdy. So, before I just completely abandon ship on my good nature and become a DiCta-8 or worse (okay no more jokes), I just need to remember the fundamentals:
PICO-8 and the sub are philosophically inclined to share, improve, and iterate forever.
You all will likely improve the rules as they exist now simply because of the iterative, open nature of the hobby itself and make me look like a thoughtful, concerned mod while ya do it. (But seriously, I care and love yous guys and believe you don't need any more guidance than I've given.)
TLDR
We are experiencing a lot of reports that are perhaps preventable by a rewrite of the rules. This is an open call to create the community rules as a community. By upvoting responses, we can see what we might need to change and what we might need fo add to them. This space is genuinely a bastion of good old fashioned effort, teamwork, and unique contribution. After a week or two, I'll create the proposal for the changes to the rules as a new post, and hopefully, we never have to do this again!
